Councilmember in Los Angeles sentenced for accepting bribes from casinos

In sports betting news, a former Los Angeles City Councilmember sentenced to 13 years in federal prison for accepting bribes and lavish casino trips to Las Vegas. Jose Huizar from Council District 14, including the Los Angeles neighborhoods of Downtown, Boyle Heights, Eagle Rock, Highland Park, El Sereno, Garvanza, Lincoln Heights, and Monterey Hills, has been found guilty of bribery and fraudulent activities. The US Judge John Walter in the Central District of California made the sentencing on Friday and the disgraced politician must also pay $443,905 in restitution to the City of Los Angeles and $38,792 to the IRS. This case has also involved a Chinese billionaire who tried to secure city approvals to build the tallest building west of the Mississippi, the Cosmopolitan, and a prostitution scandal. Seven other individuals have also been found guilty in this bribery scheme. The billionaire, Huang Wei, is currently a fugitive and has yet to appear in court, believed to be in China.
