Genting Malaysia Faces Theft of $1 Million in Casino Chips
Genting Malaysia’s Resorts World Genting property experienced a theft resulting in the disappearance of approximately $1 million worth of casino chips. The situation is now under control as surveillance footage and a police investigation have aided in the identification and capture of 10 individuals allegedly involved in the heist.
Recently, on October 28, two assailants forcibly entered a room at the SkyCasino casino in Genting Highlands designated for storing casino chips and stole MYR4.6 million worth of chips ($973,000 USD). The incident was discovered by an assistant manager who reviewed CCTV footage, revealing the perpetrators stealing chips from boxes on two tables in the gambling establishment. Although the theft occurred around 7 a.m., the assistant manager did not report it until 6 p.m. that evening.
Inside Job Suspicions Arise
Various sources, including the Chinese-language publication China Press, suspect that the theft may have been an inside job. The alleged knowledge of an employee regarding the layout of the casino and the quantity of chips would have facilitated the execution of the theft. The swift nature of the operation supports the theory of an insider’s familiarity with the casino’s operations.
Law enforcement has swiftly taken action in response to the incident, apprehending a total of 10 individuals connected to the robbery. However, specific details about their identities and roles in the crime have not been released. Two of the individuals have been released, but their involvement, if any, remains unspecified.
The arrests occurred in various locations but did not result in the recovery of the stolen chips. As a result, all patrons of SkyCasino will need to register and verify when exchanging large-denomination chips. Additionally, croupiers will be vigilant for any attempts to use the stolen chips.
Increase in Travel Costs to Genting Highlands
Motorists traveling to Genting Highlands may soon experience higher costs. According to a report from Malaysia’s Sin Chew Daily, drivers will encounter a new one-time fee when entering the popular tourist destination.
Lingkaran Cekap, a subsidiary of Genting Malaysia responsible for maintaining the road privately since the 1960s, will manage the toll. At least two toll stations will be established, affecting drivers from Kuala Lumpur or Batang Kali. The specific toll amount and start date have yet to be determined.
Surprisingly, the state government was unaware of these plans, potentially leading Genting to reconsider the project. Ongoing discussions between the government and Genting will provide updates on the toll situation in the coming weeks.
