Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale could potentially make a staggering $43 million if the Houston Astros win the 2023 World Series.
McIngvale, the famous Houston furniture store magnate, made headlines last year with a $75 million win on the Astros in the 2022 World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Currently, there are four teams vying for the 2023 World Series title. DraftKings gives the Astros +185 odds as the favorites to win back-to-back championships.
Last year’s runners-up, the Phillies, have +210 odds to win the World Series, while the Texas Rangers have +295 odds. The Arizona Diamondbacks are considered the long shot with +475 odds.
The NLCS will feature the Phillies and Diamondbacks, with the Phillies favored to win at -170 odds and the Diamondbacks at +145.
In the ALCS, the Astros and Rangers, both from the AL West division, will face off in an all-Texas showdown. The Astros are the favorites at -140 odds to win their third-straight AL pennant, while the Rangers sit at +120 odds, aiming for their first pennant since 2011.
Texas Two Step: Astros vs. Rangers in ALCS
The Astros have made it to the ALCS for the seventh consecutive season. Under manager Dusty Baker, they have won the ALCS four times since 2017 and are seeking their third-straight trip to the World Series.
In the 2022 World Series, the Astros lost to the Atlanta Braves but emerged as champions against the Phillies in the October classic.
During A.J. Hinch’s tenure as manager, the Astros won the 2017 World Series and finished as runners-up in the 2019 World Series. However, a cheating scandal led to Hinch and several front-office executives being fired.
The Astros secured the 2023 AL West title on the final day of the regular season after a tight race with the Rangers and Seattle Mariners. While the Mariners were on a winning streak and the Rangers held a three-game lead, the Astros came out on top at the right time.
The Astros acquired Justin Verlander from the New York Mets during the offseason, while the Rangers added Max Scherzer. However, Scherzer sustained a muscle injury toward the end of the season and may be unavailable for the start of the playoffs.
Astros on Verge of Rare Title Repeat
The Astros have the opportunity to achieve a rare repeat as World Series champions. It has been a challenge for teams to win consecutive championships in the past 50 years, with only a few managing to accomplish this feat.
The last team to win consecutive World Series titles was the New York Yankees, who achieved a three-peat with championships in 1998, 1999, and 2000.
The Toronto Blue Jays won back-to-back titles in 1992 and 1993, and the New York Yankees led by slugger Reggie Jackson secured consecutive crowns in 1977 and 1978.
The Cincinnati Reds won back-to-back titles in 1975 and 1976 during the Big Red Machine era, while the Oakland A’s won the World Series in three consecutive years between 1972 and 1975.
Mattress Mack Bet $6.9 Million to Win $43.4 Million
Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale, the founder of Gallery Furniture, could potentially win a massive $43.4 million if the Astros win the World Series. McIngvale has placed over $6.9 million in bets on the Astros across various sportsbooks.
This unique promotion is a way for McIngvale to promote his business and have fun with the Houston Astros, as he previously shared with Casino.org.
During Spring Training, McIngvale placed an initial $1.9 million wager on the Astros to win the World Series at +600 odds through Caesars Sportsbook. He later bet an additional $2 million on the Astros at +600 odds at DraftKings in mid-September.
When it seemed like the Astros might miss the playoffs due to strong performances from the Seattle Mariners and the Rangers, McIngvale’s faith in his team led him to place another $1 million wager at Caesars Sportsbook at +1100 odds.
Prior to the ALDS, McIngvale placed another $2 million bet on the Astros, but the odds had decreased to +450.
Aside from his gambling activities, McIngvale also made headlines for his philanthropic efforts. He donated $50,000 to support former Olympic gold-medal winning gymnast Mary Lou Retton with her medical expenses as she battles a rare form of pneumonia.
