The American Gaming Association Marks a Milestone as Online Casino Gaming Turns 10 in the U.S.
The regulated iGaming industry in the United States continues to grow, with iGaming operators generating a total gross gaming revenue (GGR) of $16.3 billion and contributing over $4 billion in tax payments, according to the American Gaming Association (AGA).
Currently, seven states have legalized iGaming – New Jersey, Michigan, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Connecticut, Delaware, and the recent addition Rhode Island, which is set to launch in Spring 2024.
Despite only being available to approximately 13% of the adult U.S. population, the AGA highlights the significant $16 billion in revenue generated by the iGaming industry.
Legalization’s Impact on Black Market
One of the primary goals of legalizing online casinos was to combat the black market, but according to the AGA, Americans still wager as much as $338 billion annually with illegal operators due to limited legal options.
Pennsylvania leads the way in iGaming revenue, generating $1.83 billion in tax revenue, followed closely by New Jersey and Michigan, both exceeding $1.3 billion.
In 2023, iGaming states have already brought in over $3.9 billion, experiencing a year-over-year increase of 22.7%.
Economic Impact of the Casino Industry
In October, the American Gaming Association released a study highlighting the significant economic activity driven by the casino gambling industry, amounting to nearly $329 billion annually.
This study marks the first update since 2018 and projects that 2023 will set new records.
David Schwartz, a gambling historian at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, remarked, “I think it speaks to the continuing popularity of casino gambling in the United States.”
Looking ahead, the AGA is focusing on the 2024 legislative calendar in several states to potentially pass new iGaming bills. States such as New York, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, and New Hampshire witnessed failed attempts to pass online gaming bills in 2023.
