Maryanne Trump Barry, the eldest sister of former President Donald Trump, has passed away at 86.
Trump Barry, an attorney who began her career in 1973 as an assistant US attorney in New Jersey, had a notable trajectory in the legal world. In 1984, she was nominated by President Ronald Reagan to the US District Court in New Jersey, and she became a federal judge known for her strength and authority in the courtroom.
Elevated to the US Court of Appeals for the Third District in 1999 by President Bill Clinton, she made her mark on many significant legal decisions. One of the most notable ones was her opposition to New Jersey’s attempts to legalize sports betting, which led to years of legal battles that eventually ended with the US Supreme Court striking down the longstanding law in 2018.
With the landmark ruling, 38 states and DC have since moved to legalize sports betting. As for Trump Barry, she retired in February 2019 amid a probe into her tax filings.
Being one of the most recent and influential judicial figures in the evolution of sports betting law, Trump Barry’s career, actions, and decisions have significantly impacted the advancement of legal sports gambling across the US.
