Earlier in his career, Caulker experienced struggles with alcohol, depression, and gambling addiction, which impacted his professional career. His experience has now led him to emphasize the challenges facing young athletes in professional sports.
Caulker, who was a defender for Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, QPR, and Cardiff City, shared struggles with addiction and depression that hampered his career. He also mentioned how his personal battles hindered his progression as a professional athlete. Caulker noted that his troubles have persisted throughout his career, resulting in squandered opportunities and unfulfilled potential as an athlete. According to Caulker, the negative experiences with gambling have been a significant challenge he has faced.
Caulker, who previously played for England and currently captains Sierra Leone, is beginning the process of obtaining his coaching badges as he looks to transition into a management role in football. ESPN reported that Caulker’s history will help him relate to the pressures faced by the younger generation of athletes. He believes the insight gained from his personal battles can benefit him as a manager by helping him guide young players.
