In a move that could have a significant impact on Colombia’s gaming industry, the country’s gambling regulator, Coljuegos, has unveiled plans to address the issue of unauthorized slot machine operations. The announcement comes after a turbulent year for Coljuegos, which has seen three different presidents hold the top position since January 2023.

The regulator estimates that there may be as many as 50,000 unauthorized slot machines in operation across the country, which could potentially cost Colombia approximately COP945 billion (US$238.14 million) in revenue. To address this issue, Coljuegos has proposed a series of measures aimed at bringing unauthorized slot machine operations under control, which also includes limiting the number of slot machines per operator and implementing restrictions on the prizes offered by these slots. In addition, new rules governing the supply of slot technology and mandatory registration are part of the proposed reforms.

These proposed measures have been opened for industry feedback, with stakeholders and industry players having a limited time to provide their insights and perspectives on the potential changes.

This latest move aligns with Coljuegos’ commitment to improving the integrity of the gaming industry in Colombia, as it continues to navigate a year filled with internal and external challenges.
