The University of Massachusetts Amherst School of Public Health conducted a study titled “Social and Economic Impacts of Casino Introduction in Massachusetts.” The study found that the casinos have contributed positively to the state’s economy and social aspects.

The introduction of casinos in Massachusetts has led to increased economic activity, employment opportunities, and tax revenues for the state.

The study reports that since the opening of Plainridge Park Casino, MGM Springfield, and Encore Boston Harbor, the state has benefited significantly from tax revenues and economic growth related to the casino industry.

Positive Impact

The study highlights the economic benefits brought by the casinos, including increased employment opportunities and tax revenues generated for the state government. The ongoing revenue stream from the casinos has been used to support various towns and cities in Massachusetts.

The study found that the casinos did not have a significant impact on crime rates in Massachusetts. Property crime decreased in host and surrounding cities, and instances of violent crime decreased near Encore in Everett and MGM in Springfield.

Population increases were observed in Everett and Plainville following the opening of casinos, while Springfield’s population remained stable. The real estate market near Encore Boston Harbor experienced growth, with home prices on the rise.

Negative Aspects

The study also pointed out some negative consequences of the casino industry, including increased spending from at-risk and problem gamblers. However, rates of problem gambling did not see a significant increase due to existing high levels of casino participation in neighboring states.

There has been a slight cannibalization effect on other industries, such as food and beverage and hospitality, due to the presence of casinos in Massachusetts.
