Heather Vanus, who has epilepsy, usually frequents the casino several times a week.

About two weeks ago, she visited the casino without her service dog, Cherry, who had recently been neutered. Vanus went with her fiancé instead.

When a security guard noticed Cherry was missing, Vanus was given a choice.

They said you can either leave voluntarily, or we can escort you out in handcuffs,” Vanus recounted to Nevada TV station KOLO. “After it happened, my fiancé looked at me and asked if that really just happened.”

Vanus shared, “Security told me that if she [Cherry] stayed at home, then I should have stayed at home with her.”

She also mentioned that she has been a regular at the Nugget Casino for three years.

“They recognize us. When we arrive, they automatically bring me water for my dog,” Vanus added regarding the casino’s staff.

Cherry is trained to alert Vanus of an impending seizure.

In response, the Nugget Casino chose not to comment on the incident to KOLO.

However, the casino stated in a release that it “is fully committed to complying with all ADA requirements, and we welcome all guests with disabilities who utilize service animals… We are dedicated to providing an inclusive environment for all our guests.”
