Nevada’s important election outcomes were uncertain on Tuesday night due to lengthy delays for voters in certain polling locations in the state.
Election sites in Nevada were set to close at 7 p.m. PT, but long lines in Nye and Washoe counties were causing an extension of the deadline for those arriving in the early evening to vote.
These lines could result in up to three hours of delay before results are available.
The predicted voting wait time at the University of Nevada, Reno, was three hours as of early Tuesday evening, Bethany Drysdale, a Washoe County official, informed the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
At 8:30 p.m. PT, voters were still waiting in line at 10 polling sites in Washoe County, according to the report.
Moreover, delays were observed at the Bob Ruud community center in Pahrump, Nev., located in Nye County, approximately 50 miles west of Las Vegas.
Only three voting machines were reportedly in operation at the Pahrump polling location. Furthermore, the site saw 145 same-day registrations by voters, causing further delays.
The evening wait to vote at the Bob Ruud community center was estimated to be two hours, Jacob Smith, an ACLU attorney, told the Review-Journal.
Voters Express Frustration
I think people are definitely frustrated, but they’re standing firm in their desire to vote,” Smith revealed to the Review-Journal. He called the lines “massive.”
Some voters at the community center opted to use paper ballots instead of the machines, causing additional delays, Smith added.
The ACLU of Nevada was among the groups that were monitoring the polls in the state, and the delay was “not surprising,” Athar Haseebullah, the organization’s executive director, told the Review-Journal.
They’re not prepared,” Haseebullah added about the lines in Nye County. “They don’t have enough machines to check people in, and they don’t have enough workers.”
The results will not be known statewide until every voter in line has had the opportunity to vote.
Nevada is one of the states that could have a significant impact on the outcome of the national presidential race.
The race was expected to be closely contested between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.
Trump Declared Winner in North Carolina
Nationally, as of 9 p.m. PT, results were still being counted. North Carolina, a key battleground state, was called for Trump by news organizations. Georgia was also declared for Trump as of 10 p.m. PT. Other crucial states were yet to be determined.
In early exit polls, one-quarter of those surveyed nationally told CNN they were enthusiastic or satisfied with the state of the nation. However, over four in 10 were dissatisfied, and around three in 10 described themselves as angry.
