Arkansas voters on Election Day changed their decision to legalize commercial casinos in several counties.
Six years ago, a statewide referendum authorized various forms of gambling in Arkansas. The amendment allowed certain racetracks to become full-fledged casinos, and a casino has since opened in Pine Bluff.
Legal disputes delayed the issuance of the Pope County casino license for many years.
After resolving conflicts, the Cherokee Nation was awarded the license, but the recent election results have invalidated it.
Arkansas Voters Support New Amendment
Another tribe financed a referendum to repeal the Cherokee Nation’s casino license in Pope County. The measure passed with majority support.
The amendment only allows casino licenses in counties where local referendums have approved them.
The outcome revoked the Cherokees’ license, preventing their plans for a new casino.
Local Support in Pope County
Despite previous opposition, Pope County voters rejected the recent referendum, supporting the Cherokee Nation’s casino proposal.
The local judge expressed disappointment with the referendum results, citing misinformation and misleading advertising.
