Next year may see an increase in state-level legislation for online sports betting and iGaming, as mentioned by DraftKings (NASDAQ: DKNG) CEO Jason Robins after a slower 2024. He expressed optimism about legislative possibilities for iGaming in 2025 during Craig-Hallum’s 4th Annual Online Gaming conference call.
Robins sees 2025 as a year for potential momentum in iGaming legislation and mentioned that currently, seven states allow iGaming. He did not name specific states as potential newcomers for internet casinos next year. However, New York and Illinois are often mentioned in discussions regarding potential iGaming expansion.
In terms of sports betting approvals, Robins mentioned Minnesota as a possible candidate for permitting sports wagering next year. With California and Texas unlikely to advance sports betting propositions in 2025, the focus remains on states like Georgia and Minnesota where efforts to legalize sports betting are ongoing.
Despite the dominance of FanDuel and DraftKings in the US online sports betting market, Robins emphasized the need to remain competitive and vigilant against Tier 2 competitors like BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, Fanatics, and Penn Entertainment’s ESPN Bet.
