Atlantic City is thriving in 2025, signaling a resurgence for this famed casino destination. For individuals in South Jersey aiming for employment in this East Coast gaming hub, fresh public transport solutions are set to launch soon.
New Jersey boasts a comprehensive public transit system, but much of its infrastructure primarily serves North Jersey, catering mainly to commuters traveling to New York. In contrast, South Jersey frequently has limited transportation options, a situation that outgoing Governor Phil Murphy (D) is working to improve.
At a recent event held at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, the Governor announced several new public transport initiatives for South Jersey, highlighting the introduction of an express shuttle connecting Vineland to Atlantic City.
“Increasing access to Atlantic City is beneficial for all,” stated Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small. “This new express shuttle service from Vineland offers residents in Cumberland County a quicker and more efficient way to reach jobs in our city’s casinos.”
The Vineland to Atlantic City shuttle is set to commence this fall, with the specific launch date still to be determined. The service will operate two round trips each weekday, linking the Vineland Transportation Center on Landis Ave. and E. Wood St. with the Atlantic City Bus Terminal at 1901 Atlantic Ave.
Long Commute Ahead
According to Murphy, the upcoming public transit enhancements for South Jersey will “improve connections to job opportunities.” However, those utilizing the Vineland to Atlantic City shuttle should be prepared for a longer commute.
Traveling from Vineland to Atlantic City will take approximately one hour, with the Atlantic City Bus Terminal being a short walk to both Bally’s and Caesars casinos.
Moreover, Resorts Casino to the north and Tropicana to the south are merely an eighth of a mile from the terminal. Factoring in the commute from home to the Vineland bus stop, the total travel time to reach an Atlantic City casino could be significant.
Details surrounding ticket prices for the shuttle have yet to be revealed by Murphy and the South Jersey Transportation Authority. The service will be assessed after one year, determining its feasibility for long-term operation based on passenger usage.
Vineland holds the title of the largest municipality in Cumberland County and is located close to the Delaware Bay, where its marshes were historically recognized as excellent for grape cultivation, which influenced the city’s name.
As per the 2020 US Census, Cumberland County ranks last in New Jersey with a per capita income of $30,200, significantly lower than Passaic County, which stands at $37,500.
Vineland’s Contribution to Atlantic City Casinos
Curious about employment statistics for individuals living in Vineland who work at Atlantic City casinos? According to the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, as of August 7, a total of 246 casino workers from Atlantic City are residents of Vineland.
When considering the broader Cumberland region, including areas such as Bridgeton, Cedarville, Fairton, Greenwich, Heislerville, Mauricetown, Millville, and Port Norris, there are 388 resort workers employed in Atlantic City casinos.
Overall, Atlantic City’s nine casinos employ over 22,800 individuals, a decline from approximately 30,000 in the summer of 2018, following the openings of the Hard Rock and Ocean Casino.
