  • Monday’s Powerball jackpot is set at $750 million
  • The jackpot has not been won since May 31
  • This prize ranks as Powerball’s 10th-largest ever

The Powerball lottery was initiated in 1998 as Lotto America. The drawing on Monday night features the 10th largest jackpot in the game’s 37-year history.

The Powerball jackpot has consistently rolled over throughout the summer. This trend continued on August 23, when no ticket matched the winning numbers: 11, 14, 34, 47, 51, with the red Powerball being 18.

Tonight’s draw marks the 37th occurrence since the last jackpot win—a $204.5 million annuity awarded to one ticket in California on May 31.

“The thrill of chasing a massive Powerball jackpot is back,” stated Matt Strawn, Chair of the Powerball Product Group and CEO of the Iowa Lottery. “A single $2 Powerball ticket could win tonight’s jackpot, and part of each ticket sale supports local community programs and services.”

Powerball is available in 45 states, along with Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Over half of the ticket price remains in the state where sold.

Since its transformation from Lotto America to Powerball in 1992, the game has generated over $36 billion for charitable initiatives supported by the participating lotteries.

Jackpot of $750 Million

The Powerball draw on August 25 promises a staggering jackpot of $750 million. This amount is the 10th highest in Powerball’s history.

Should there be one lucky winner, they will have the choice of receiving the full $750 million payout spread over 30 years, or a lump sum cash option of about $338.6 million. Both amounts are subject to federal and potentially state taxes.

The cash option’s total would drop to $213.36 million after applying a federal tax rate of 37%. Alongside Puerto Rico, eight states do not impose taxes on lottery winnings—these include California, Florida, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. The highest lamentable tax states for lottery victories are New York, which has a state tax of 10.9%, followed closely by New Jersey and D.C. with taxes of 10.75%.

Powerball tickets are available starting at only $2, providing players a chance against odds of 1 in 292.2 million for the jackpot. An optional $1 Power Play can be added in most Play jurisdictions, which can multiply non-jackpot prizes by factors of 2, 3, 4, 5, or even 10.

Saturday’s Winners

While there was no jackpot winner on Saturday, the draw did yield some significant prizes.

Two winning tickets sold in Maine and New York each matched all five white numbers to claim $1 million. Additionally, a ticket in South Dakota matched all five white numbers and utilized the Power Play option, doubling their winnings to $2 million.

Five tickets that opted for Power Play matched four white balls along with the red Powerball to win $100,000. Another 31 tickets without the add-on secured $50,000 by matching four white balls and the Powerball.

More than a million tickets earned prizes simply by matching the Powerball. Out of these, 236,650 players enhanced their winnings to $8 by opting for the Power Play.
