Senators Advocate for a Ban on Gaming Ads Similar to Tobacco Restrictions

The leading figure behind Alberta’s regulated igaming initiative, likely mirroring Ontario’s model, is one of 14 provincial officials facing possible recall by voters.

Dale Nally, who serves the Morinville-St. Albert electoral district, is a member of the ruling United Conservative Party under Premier Danielle Smith and currently holds the position of Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction.

Recently, there has been a surge in recall movements aimed at UCP members, posing a potential threat to the legislative power balance in the province. The UCP holds 49 seats in the legislature, securing a majority, with the Alberta New Democratic Party trailing behind at 38 seats.

While it remains a long road ahead before any of the 14 officials face removal from their positions, the public’s growing discontent sparks curiosity about the underlying issues, considering Alberta and B.C. are the only Canadian provinces permitting the recall of politicians.

Nally attended the Canadian Gaming Summit in Toronto in June, where he informed attendees to anticipate the debut of Alberta’s new igaming market “early next year.” The potential effects of these recall initiatives on that launch are still uncertain.

Casino.org has reached out to Nally’s office for comments but has not yet received a response.

Canadian Senators Advocate for Sports Betting Ad Ban

Recently, reports emerged stating that two Canadian Senators had addressed a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney urging the government to implement a ban on all advertising related to sports betting applications and websites through the CRTC.

The correspondence from Charlottetown Senator Percy Downe and Waterloo Senator Marty Deacon highlighted the adverse impacts that rampant advertising is having on individuals of all ages, turning their devices into what they described as “pocket-sized casinos.”

Senator Deacon has already introduced legislation aimed at establishing a new regulatory framework for sports betting advertisements, which is currently progressing through the House of Commons.

“While human vulnerabilities can’t be completely legislated away, we can limit the exploitative practices of others,” Senator Downe remarked.

Ontario has already transformed its advertising regulations by prohibiting the use of sports celebrities in gambling promotion ads, with an exception allowing responsible gambling messaging.

PENN Streamlines Esports Division

As reported by Esports Insider, theScore’s esports division in Toronto has recently experienced significant layoffs.

PENN Entertainment, the parent company, recently announced a strategic pivot, ending its partnership with ESPN, focusing theScore on the U.S. sports betting market starting December 1, and intensifying its efforts in sports betting and online casino operations in Ontario. The introduction of a regulated market in Alberta is also expected in 2026.

According to Esports Insider, over a dozen former staff members have taken to social media to share news of their dismissal. The esports operation, established in 2015, predates PENN’s acquisition of theScore, which occurred in 2021.

Casino.org has contacted a representative from PENN to confirm the layoffs but has not received a reply yet.

DraftKings Unveils Spanish-Language Feature

DraftKings announced yesterday the launch of a Spanish-language tab within its sportsbook and casino application, initially made available to select customers across the U.S. and Ontario. This feature will roll out to all users on their network in the upcoming weeks.

Users whose mobile device’s language is configured to Spanish will automatically see the DraftKings app primarily in their language after an update.

“Integrating Spanish language functionality into our leading product enhances the user experience and broadens our market reach,” stated Corey Gottlieb, Chief Product Officer at DraftKings. “This aligns with our dedication to providing an authentic, personalized experience for all users.”
