- Lummi Nation’s harvested clams from Washington have been recalled
- These clams are believed to be contaminated with norovirus
- The Silver Reef Casino Resort serves these clams
Recently, clams gathered by a company in Washington State, which also operates a tribal casino, have been subjected to a recall.

On Monday, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended that Manila clams harvested by the Lummi Indian Business Council should not be consumed, sold, or served. This warning was issued due to potential norovirus contamination.
“Raw shellfish such as clams and oysters contaminated with norovirus can result in illness, particularly severe in individuals with weakened immune systems. Foods containing norovirus might appear and smell normal,” the FDA stated.
Consumers of these clams experiencing illness symptoms should consult their healthcare provider and notify their local health authorities. Symptoms related to gastroenteritis may include diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and fever,” the alert continued.
Typical norovirus symptoms comprise diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
About Manila Clams
The Lummi Indian Business is the commercial arm of the Lummi Nation, a federally recognized tribe located in Whatcom County, Washington.
The tribe collects Manila clams from its tidelands. Named after their original habitat near the Philippines, Manila clams thrive in cooler waters, making them readily available in Northern Washington.
According to the FDA, the Manila clams harvested by the Lummi Indian Business were distributed to various restaurants and retailers across nine states, including Washington, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Nevada, New York, and Oregon.
Clams exhibit a range of shapes and sizes. The Quahog, littleneck, and chowder clams are among the most sought-after varieties. Unlike the steamers of the East Coast, Manila clams feature hard shells and are small in size, known for their sweet flavor.
The Tribal Casino Resort
The clam industry is crucial for the Lummi Tribe’s economic independence, alongside the significant contributions from its Silver Reef Casino Resort.
Located in Ferndale, the tribal casino attracts visitors from Canada. The casino’s website features information on the current exchange rate for the Canadian Dollar, situated just 40 miles south of Vancouver.
The Silver Reef boasts over 1,000 slot machines, a variety of 15 live dealer table games, and a sportsbook. The resort itself features 206 hotel rooms, a full-service spa, a spacious 23,000-square-foot event center for concerts and large gatherings, along with a renowned 18-hole golf course.
Additionally, the tribal casino includes eight dining venues. Among these is The Steak House, offering “Steamer Clams,” which are local clams served with butter, garlic, shallots, and white wine broth, complemented by grilled sourdough bread.
