The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has broadened its “Don’t Regret the Bet” advertising initiative to encompass high school sports booster clubs across the state, commencing this year.
This initiative enables qualifying booster organizations to obtain funding of up to $4,000 for promoting responsible gaming messages during school sporting events and via digital platforms.
Officials from MGCB stated that the objective of this initiative is to heighten awareness about the potential risks of gambling among youth while offering financial assistance to school athletic programs.
“Educating about responsible gaming is fundamental — it’s essential for safeguarding Michigan’s youth in a time when betting content is pervasive,” remarked Henry Williams, MGCB Executive Director. “Booster clubs are highly trusted within their communities, making them perfect allies to promote positive behaviors and generate funds for their programs.”
A recent study from the University of Michigan’s C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital revealed that one in six parents of teenagers express concern that their child may be developing a gambling issue, underscoring the necessity for enhanced education and preventive actions.
Through this program, eligible booster organizations can secure up to $4,000 in funding by sharing MGCB-approved responsible gaming messages. Fundraising activities could include digital and social media campaigns featuring the “Don’t Regret the Bet” slogan, placements in event schedules and scoreboards, and distributing branded posters and graphics at school sports events.
To be eligible, organizations must be school-affiliated 501(c)(3) booster clubs, agree to display responsible gaming messages, and submit a brief application including basic reporting.
This program expansion coincides with ongoing research indicating that young individuals are frequently exposed to sports betting advertisements. Studies show many youths recall multiple betting ads weekly, particularly through social media and digital platforms, often with minimal exposure to responsible gambling information.
Applications are now open and will be evaluated on a rolling basis. Interested booster clubs can apply by contacting [email protected].
