There’s a growing sentiment among investors that the recent decline in shares of sports betting data providers could be linked to prediction markets. However, alternative viewpoints are emerging that suggest these data entities may actually benefit from the rise of yes/no exchanges.

A recent report from Citizens Equity Research analyst Jordan Bender, following a dialogue with executives from Genius Sports (NYSE: GENI), emphasizes that the company is establishing itself to succeed, irrespective of the outcomes in the prediction market sector. Genius has initiated the acquisition of Legend, which owns Casino.org.

The firm is taking a proactive stance regarding this emerging sector, believing that it stands to gain from any direction the market takes,” the analyst remarked.

Bender highlights early signs of increased demand for the data provided by sports wagering companies. This presents a compelling opportunity for long-term growth, as exchange fees are currently averaging around $3 billion annually.

The Role of the NFL

The NFL, a key shareholder in Genius Sports, may have a significant impact on the interaction between data providers and prediction markets.

While smaller North American sports leagues are quickly adopting prediction markets, the NFL remains cautious. However, Bender points out a recent shift in this stance.

“If the NFL permits prediction market entities to utilize league intellectual property, it could position GENI to generate additional revenue beyond its 2028 projections, even without significant prediction market income. Conversely, if there were to be a ban on sports-related prediction markets, the company's financial forecast would remain stable, allowing Genius to continue normal operations,” the analyst stated. “

The NHL and Major League Soccer (MLS) have begun partnerships with prediction market operators.

Growth Potential for Data Providers in Prediction Markets

Some analysts have previously indicated that the burgeoning prediction market sector does not pose a threat to data providers, as notable clients from these providers are entering the yes/no derivatives market.

“DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics have encountered no resistance in launching their platforms, and industry stakeholders are adapting their views as they recognize that this market isn’t disappearing anytime soon,” Bender notes.

Sell-side analysts predict that the U.S. prediction markets landscape will eventually be dominated by five key players, including DraftKings and FanDuel. This could bode well for data providers in the long run.
