For a long time, sportsbooks have relied predominantly on odds and basic statistics without providing significant context to guide users in their betting choices. However, this trend is shifting as operators begin to explore methods for delivering information that is both timely and meaningful, enhancing the overall user experience.
Hard Rock Digital is among the newest players to embrace this transformation with the launch of its AI Insights feature. In an exclusive interview with Yogonet, Mitch Mitchell, Senior Vice President of Data, AI, and Predictive Analytics, shares insights into the development, functionality, and implications of this feature for the future of sportsbook offerings.
What specific gap did Hard Rock Bet aim to address for bettors through the introduction of AI Insights?
Traditionally, sportsbooks have provided minimal contextual information, presenting mostly surface-level stats that bettors already know or find uninteresting. With AI Insights, our goal was to unveil the engaging narrative context that makes sports captivating: to highlight the stories that truly resonate with the teams and events our players are passionate about.
By leveraging AI’s flexibility and grounding capabilities, we aim to connect raw market data with compelling narratives, ensuring a seamless experience for users.
As you mentioned, AI Insights transcends mere data by offering contextual narratives surrounding the games. What measures are in place to ensure these insights remain both accurate and genuinely beneficial for users making decisions?
Each insight is rooted in dependable source data, which significantly mitigates inaccuracies. In addition to this, we have a team of experts actively reviewing the insights provided, whether it be injury reports, lineup changes, or team momentum, to ensure both accuracy and relevance.
Personalization is key in this feature, with insights adapted to users’ preferred teams and leagues. How does player data enhance this experience without overwhelming users?
When users access the app, they have a specific goal in mind, rather than aimlessly scrolling through a content feed or interacting with a bot. Personalization focuses on presenting the most pertinent insight for the right event at the right time, sparing players from the hassle of searching for the content that interests them the most.
We utilize insights into player preferences and behaviors to keep information relevant, enabling users to indicate their specific content needs. This personalization manifests in features like the “For You” page and Favorites tab, where insights align with the teams, leagues, and players the user actively follows, all tailored to enhance the customer experience.
Currently, the feature is available for NBA, NHL, and soccer. What factors guide your prioritization of sports or leagues as AI Insights is expanded further?
Ultimately, it comes down to the quality of insights and player interest. The models can only perform as well as the data that fuels them. Sports with rich data environments emerged as natural initial targets. NBA, NHL, and soccer were ideal for our first steps, offering high-quality insights to a wide audience.
However, there is also substantial merit in providing insights for lesser-known sports; areas where the underlying narratives are more challenging to uncover yet equally fascinating. We’ve even trialed insights in table tennis, revealing some incredible storylines that I possibly wouldn’t have come across without AI insights.
AI is increasingly becoming a key focal point in the industry. How does AI Insights align with Hard Rock Digital’s broader long-term strategy regarding data, predictive analytics, and user engagement?
AI Insights exemplifies our overarching AI philosophy: AI should prioritize customer service, not the opposite. There exists a temptation to view AI as a separate feature; simply adding a chatbot doesn’t constitute innovation. When users engage with a sportsbook, they intend to bet, not to type prompts.
“How can we utilize AI?” is an inaccurate inquiry. The pertinent question is always “how can we enhance the player experience?” There’s a multitude of capabilities AI brings to the table, and we’re only beginning to explore its potential. Product teams need to adopt innovative approaches to unlock the value of AI for their customers. Insights serve as a prime example, offering substantial context and analysis while minimizing user friction.
Looking to the future, how do you foresee AI transforming the sportsbook experience in the coming years, and what role do you envision Hard Rock Bet playing in that evolution?
Anyone claiming to have a definitive vision of the future over the next few years is likely speculating. The rate of change is accelerating; it’s disruptive and difficult to foresee beyond a six-month window. The main challenge is shifting from rapid development to quality ideas.
Improvements will be evident in the extent of personalization and the speed with which new features are rolled out. Players will increasingly expect substantial enhancements in shorter cycles. At Hard Rock Bet, we aim to be the operator that meets these expectations, not by pursuing AI for its own sake, but by identifying AI applications that genuinely enhance the player experience.
