The Indian Gaming Association (IGA) has appointed new leadership members to its Board of Directors during the 2026 Indian Gaming Tradeshow & Convention.
Tehassi Hill has been selected as Vice Chairman, while Michell Hicks is appointed as Treasurer. Both will serve for a two-year term, representing tribal governments across Indian Country.
Hill, who is in his third term as Chairman of the Oneida Nation, has a solid track record in cultural preservation, environmental advocacy, and tribal sovereignty. In his inaugural speech, Hill highlighted the importance of unity and progress for tribal communities.
“We must remain focused on the challenges that lie ahead while actively sharing our successes,” Hill stated. “Standing united is essential; we must be a formidable force for our tribal nations. I am committed to serving all of you and ensuring that we advance sustainably and responsibly for our communities.
Michell Hicks, a certified public accountant and principal chief of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, has successfully led her tribe through significant economic development, managing a population of over 15,000 members.
“We face numerous challenges ahead, particularly the growth of illegal markets that endanger our industry,” she commented. “Addressing these challenges will require strategic planning, resources, and collective action, and I am dedicated to working alongside all of you.”
IGA Chairman David Z. Bean expressed his support for the new officers, highlighting their expertise and integrity as critical in these challenging times for tribal gaming.
“Today’s election represents the strength of our tribal leadership and the solidarity of our membership,” he remarked. “Vice Chairman Hill and Treasurer Hicks possess the skill, integrity, and dedication required to drive this organization forward.”
Bean also noted that these appointments arrive at a crucial time as the tribal sector grapples with issues like illegal market activities and federal overreach. The enhanced leadership team is expected to be vital in safeguarding tribal sovereignty and the future of Indian gaming.
The new officers will work with the IGA Board as tribal leaders pursue a unified national agenda aimed at preserving the integrity of tribal gaming, defending sovereignty, and boosting tribal economies.
