- Native tribes typically provide lower fuel prices due to their exemption from state taxes on gasoline and diesel.
- Current fuel prices are approximately $1 higher than they were last year.
- Some tribes are merging fuel sales with gaming operations to establish ‘gasinos’.
Casino.org has introduced a new term, ‘gasinos’, referring to gas stations that include slot machines and/or table games, predominantly located on tribal lands.

The ongoing conflict involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran has impacted the critical Strait of Hormuz oil route, resulting in a worldwide increase in gas prices.
As reported by AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular gas as of April 13 is $4.12, up from $3.18 a year ago.
Higher state taxes have led to significantly elevated gas prices along the West Coast, notably in Washington ($5.39), Oregon ($4.98), and California ($5.89).
Tribal nations are capitalizing on their status as sovereign entities, enabling them to offer gasoline and diesel at much lower rates since they are not subject to state fuel taxes. Many Native American communities use this affordable fuel as an incentive for visitors to their tribal resorts, casinos, and gasinos.
Tribal Fuel Rates
As sovereign entities, tribes involved in fuel retail must still remit the federal tax of 18.4 cents per gallon for gasoline and 24.3 cents per gallon for diesel, mirroring the rates applicable to commercial gas stations. However, they enjoy immunity from state fuel taxes.
California imposes the highest state gas tax at approximately 71 cents per gallon, followed by Washington at 59 cents, and Oregon at 40 cents.
Many tribes in these states leverage their federal Indian gaming rights alongside their exemptions from state fuel taxes.
Gas stations, often referred to as “trading posts,” are typically situated on sovereign land adjacent to tribal casinos. Some tribes have taken it a step further by establishing gasinos.
For instance, California’s Bear River Pump and Play, located near the Bear River Casino Resort in Northern California, sells regular gas for $5.97 per gallon, approximately 20 cents lower than in nearby towns, and features around three dozen slot machines.
At the Morongo Travel Center in Cabazon, where patrons can find around 40 slot machines with jackpots of up to $5,000, regular gas is priced at just $5.10—much less than the $6 or more being charged in Palm Springs.
As California’s gasinos do not serve alcohol, they welcome players aged 18 and over, whereas tribal casinos that offer alcohol usually require patrons to be at least 21.
Gasinos can also be found outside California. The Miccosukee Tribe operates the Little Trail Casino along Interstate 75 in Florida, featuring around 150 electronic bingo games and a bar.
There are an estimated 500 gas stations owned by tribal nations across the United States.
Trump’s Remarks
Former President Donald Trump has repeatedly suggested that the conflict with Iran may soon conclude. Nonetheless, he acknowledged on Sunday that consumers may continue to feel the effects of rising fuel prices ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
“Gas prices could remain the same or possibly increase a bit more, but they should hover around current levels,” Trump stated during an interview with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo on ‘Sunday Morning Futures’.
