Casumo is set to exit the Ontario market, and with the introduction of BetNova, the number of licensed operators in the province will soon decrease to 47.

Number of Licensed Operators in Ontario to Fall to 47

As of today, the iGaming Ontario website still lists 48 licensed igaming operators and 82 platforms. However, an iGaming Ontario representative indicated that they update the public directory to remove operators once they cease accepting bets.

For Casumo, this cessation will occur on April 30, when all gambling activities will conclude. Additionally, no further deposits will be permitted from April 23, and player accounts will be closed by May 14, according to Canadian Gaming Business reports. Confirmation from Casumo has not been acquired at this time.

Introduction of BetNova

Originating from Malta, Casumo secured its AGCO license to operate in Ontario in June 2022 and launched shortly thereafter. The platform featured an array of themed slot machines and popular live casino games like blackjack, roulette, and baccarat.

BetNova is a venture owned by Goldrush Gaming, a prominent player in the South African igaming space.

The Ontario igaming landscape is among the most competitive globally. Since its inception in April 2022, several operators have exited, including Fitzdares, Unibet, Rivalry, Betiton, and MagicRed Casino.

iGaming Ontario refrains from publishing financial data specific to individual operators. However, in February, the province reported $8.7 billion in total cash wagers and $342 million in revenue, supported by nearly 1.3 million active users. The average revenue per active player account for that month was calculated at $264.

Future of Advertising in Sports Betting

Amid political momentum in Ottawa to prohibit various forms of sports betting advertising, a bill is advancing through the House of Commons aimed at establishing new advertising regulations for lawful gambling. Operators are left to ponder the implications this will have on their marketing and affiliate strategies.

A discussion titled “Betting on Ads: The Future of Sports Betting in Canada” is scheduled in Conference Room 2 at an undetermined time. This panel, led by Steve McAllister, Co-Founder of The Parleh, will feature insights from industry leaders including Johnny Capo, CEO of betstamp, Kris Abbott, General Manager of Stake Canada, Max Levy, Director of Marketing at Bet99, and Aly Lalani, iGaming Marketing Consultant.

Another noteworthy session on Day 2 is “Building Sovereignty: The Rise of First Nations Ownership and Innovation in Western Canada’s Gaming Sector,” taking place at 11:45 a.m. in Conference Room 1. This topic has gained significant traction over the past two years as land-based casinos have been acquired by First Nations on the west coast. The session, hosted by Katie Lever, General Counsel & Chief Administrative Officer at Great Canadian Entertainment, will include speakers such as Michael Peters, CEO of Glooscap Ventures, Michael Tobin, Founder & CEO of Continent8, and Chief Paul Rice, Council Chief of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake.
