As part of its efforts to reduce gambling-related harm, the Pennsylvania General Assembly is funding a groundbreaking state-wide digital application designed for gambling support in collaboration with Almond Digital Health.
Almond Digital Health specializes in health-related digital solutions, particularly focusing on gambling addiction.
Headquartered in Clarks Green, within Lackawanna County, Almond is collaborating with the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services to launch a mobile app that caters to gamblers statewide.
“This initiative is all about expanding accessibility and scaling support,” stated Kath Middleton, chief product officer at Almond Digital Health. “Pennsylvania is adopting a strategy that integrates both conventional healthcare and innovative tech solutions.”
A spokesperson for Casino.org mentioned that the project is financed via a grant from the Pennsylvania DHS. Last year, Pennsylvania’s gambling revenue soared to an unprecedented $6.79 billion.
Additional Support Initiatives
State Representatives Joe McAndrew (D-Allegheny) and Jim Prokopiak (D-Bucks) have long encouraged a reassessment of how Pennsylvania allocates funds for problem gambling to reflect the growing trend of online gambling.
“This will enhance accessibility and bolster the state’s efforts to engage individuals early on, fostering responsible gambling behaviors and preventing addiction through education,” remarked McAndrew. “This initiative modernizes the way Pennsylvanians can access support.”
Prokopiak stated, “The gaming landscape has dramatically evolved over the last twenty years.”
We are addressing a contemporary issue with a contemporary solution,” Prokopiak remarked.
The Almond Digital Health app will be specifically designed for the Pennsylvania gaming market, known as one of the most lucrative in the country, featuring 17 physical casinos, retail and online sports betting, iGaming, video lottery terminals, and fantasy sports. QR codes for Almond Digital Health will also be displayed in casinos and in various online platforms.
The Almond app is free, requires only 30 seconds to register, and ensures confidentiality. It will serve as a complementary solution alongside existing services for problem gambling in Pennsylvania, including the self-exclusion programs provided by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board and the 1-800-GAMBLER helpline.
The Rise of Digital Gaming and Its Challenges
The prevalence of gambling problems in Pennsylvania has intensified due to controversial online betting markets. According to Josh Ercole, executive director of the Council on Compulsive Gambling of Pennsylvania, for the first time, individuals aged 18 to 24 are constituting the majority of outreach calls to 1-800-GAMBLER.
In January, research conducted by Penn State University revealed that online gambling participation has reached all-time highs. Approximately 30% of Pennsylvania adults engage in some form of online gambling, according to the survey.
The annual gaming assessment from Penn State concluded that between 2.5% and 6.4% of adults in the state are identified as problem gamblers.
