Why It Seems Like All Escalators on the Las Vegas Strip Are Out of Order

What ascends must eventually decline — and when it comes to escalators on the Las Vegas Strip, their downtime seems prolonged. It’s rare to find a day on the Strip without several escalators at pedestrian bridges being out of service.

These systems contend with the same longstanding issues — regular monthly and annual assessments, intoxicated individuals activating the emergency stop, and the effects of wear, extreme temperatures, and vandalism.

However, an aggravating new obstacle is keeping them out of commission for extended periods.

“Why can we construct a Sphere adorned with 1.2 million LEDs resembling a colossal eye … yet we struggle to maintain a functioning escalator?” a question raised by the YouTube channel Metal Playgrounds.

The challenge is not a lack of funding. Despite fluctuations in tourism, hotel room taxes remain sufficient to cover infrastructure improvements along the resort corridor.

The real issue is a significant shortage of specialized components.

Many of the Strip’s escalators and elevators are the very units that were introduced with the pedestrian bridges three decades ago.

“A hotel will express concern that our escalators are non-functional, and we respond, ‘Yes, they are, but we ordered the part three months ago from Germany (as the manufacturer is no longer operational),’” stated Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom during a recent commission meeting, as reported by KSNV-TV/Las Vegas.

Prior to 1995, the Las Vegas Strip had no outdoor escalators. Until that point, pedestrians crossed busy intersections using walk signals, often at great risk. As traffic surged and pedestrian fatalities increased, the county elevated foot traffic to above the hustle and bustle.

The challenge? The escalators were engineered for 12-hour operations in climate-controlled shopping centers, not designed for 24/7 functionality in the harsh heat, dust, and constant messes found on the Strip. Consequently, Las Vegas escalators fail much more frequently than those at typical retail establishments.

As several units remain closed for up to three months awaiting specialty parts, it triggers a series of failures that makes the entire system appear malfunctioning.

Visitors at the recent County Commission meeting expressed frustration, noting that these closures necessitate inconvenient detours through smoky casinos or climbing steep stairs — a significant challenge for older visitors and individuals with mobility concerns. (The elevators, positioned directly beneath the bridges, experience the same mechanical failures as the escalators.)

“It’s a matter of time for things to become outdated,” Segerblom acknowledged, vowing to prioritize necessary repairs.
