Las Vegas Sands has advertised multiple job vacancies on LinkedIn for its Dallas location.
Sands aims to establish a comprehensive resort casino akin to The Venetian on the Las Vegas Strip—a property originally developed by the company’s late founder, Sheldon Adelson. In early 2022, Sands divested its Las Vegas holdings, including The Venetian, Palazzo, and Venetian Expo, for a staggering $6.25 billion.
Dr. Miriam Adelson, the widow of Sheldon Adelson and majority stakeholder in the casino firm operating in Macau and Singapore, has long been keen to break into the Texas market.
Following her husband’s passing in 2021, Adelson has invested nearly $30 million in lobbying efforts to persuade Texas lawmakers to permit casino gaming. While her initiatives have yet to bear fruit, Sands remains steadfast in its pursuit.
Attracting More Visitors to Texas
While Texas prohibits commercial casino gambling, it does host tribal casinos that offer electronic bingo gaming machines resembling slot machines. Adelson, in collaboration with billionaire Mark Cuban, co-owner of the Dallas Mavericks, believes that introducing casinos could enhance Texas’s appeal as a destination.
“Have you ever asked your friends from other states how often they save to visit Texas? How eager are they to come here in the summer? The answer won’t surprise you,” Cuban shared with The Dallas Morning News.
“While gambling is certainly enticing, the true benefit is becoming a destination where people plan their trips a year in advance. We need to offer more attractions to bring visitors. It’s experiences like these that can elevate Texas to the top of tourism rankings nationwide,” he concluded.
Sands is hiring for numerous IT-related roles in Dallas. A company representative mentioned to The Dallas Morning News that the Dallas office is primarily focused on enhancing “software development capabilities.”
“Dallas-Fort Worth was chosen for its wealth of skilled technology professionals, strong infrastructure, and a vibrant innovation ecosystem backed by esteemed universities,” stated Ron Reese, VP of communications at Sands. “The area’s connectivity across North America, cost-efficient operational environment, and favorable business policies allow for sustainable growth and seamless collaboration with partners.”
Challenges from Casino Opponents
Significant opposition from influential Texas politicians hampers Sands’ efforts to establish a casino in Dallas. Governor Greg Abbott (R) and Lt. Governor Dan Patrick (R) have both expressed their opposition to casinos. Both officials are seeking reelection this November, with no term limits in Texas.
Abbott faces a challenge from Democrat Gina Hinojosa, a state representative from Travis County. Recent polls indicate Abbott holds a six-point lead.
Patrick’s opponents include either state Rep. Vikki Goodwin (D-Travis) or union leader Marcos Velez, who are heading into a runoff on May 26. In a previous statement, Goodwin expressed her willingness to discuss casino legislation should she secure the position of Lt. Governor.
“We must heed the voice of the Texas electorate. Many issues exist where the majority of Texans hold one view while their representatives pursue an opposing course,” Goodwin stated. “Gambling could very well be one of those issues.”
As of now, there is no new polling data regarding the Lt. Governor’s race.
