Announced in May, Rush Street Gaming, based in Chicago, is actively constructing The Landing Hotel at Rivers Casino Portsmouth.

The property will feature 106 rooms, including 32 suites, designed to compete with Boyd Gaming’s planned resort casino in Norfolk. Boyd’s $750 million project is expected to be completed by late 2027, situated next to Harbor Park, home to a Minor League Baseball team.

Since its launch in January 2023, Rivers Portsmouth has functioned without a hotel. According to Rivers Portsmouth President Antonio Perez, The Landing Hotel is scheduled to open early in the upcoming year, preceding Boyd’s casino debut.

Mayor’s State of the City Address

Rivers officials commemorated the topping-off ceremony of The Landing Hotel, coinciding with Mayor Shannon Glover’s annual State of the City address hosted in the casino’s Event Center. Glover highlighted significant investments in the city, a decrease in crime, and improvements along the waterfront.

“This hotel has been part of our vision from the very start. It enhances lodging opportunities in our city, allowing guests to enjoy an experience beyond just a quick visit,” Shannon stated.

City officials, including economic development director Brian Donahue, noted that it has been many years since an eight-story building was erected.

“It’s been decades… but I can assure you, there’s much more to come,” expressed Donahue.

Portsmouth is thriving not just because of Rivers Casino but also due to the region’s long-standing economic dependence on maritime, logistics, defense, and renewable energy industries, all currently in high demand.

Boyd Gaming’s Norfolk project will incorporate a 1,500-slot casino, 50 table games, and a sportsbook. It will also feature a 200-room hotel with 13,000 square feet of meeting space, a 45,000-square-foot pool deck, and eight dining options, along with a 1,000-space parking garage.

Rivers Portsmouth’s Offerings

The Landing brand is the preferred choice for Rush at its gaming establishments. The Rivers Casino Portsmouth Landing will be an addition to Landing hotels at Rivers Casino Pittsburgh and Rivers Casino Schenectady in New York.

Rivers Portsmouth has proved to be a successful venture for Rush, launching with a $340 million investment, and as of April, showcasing 1,415 slot machines, 84 live dealer table games, and a BetRivers Sportsbook.

Gross gaming revenue (GGR) at the casino has consistently risen year-over-year. In its initial year, Rivers Portsmouth generated a GGR of $250 million, increasing to $309 million in 2024 and $316.3 million last year.

In addition to its gaming floor and The Event Center, Rivers Casino Portsmouth features five full-service restaurants, a grab-and-go eatery, and a Starbucks.
