Black Oak Casino Resort in California is marking its 25th anniversary, transforming from a modest gaming venue into a comprehensive resort offering entertainment, hotel accommodations, dining options, and family-friendly activities.

Launched on May 15, 2001, the casino is managed by the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians. Initially established in Tuolumne County within a metal structure that held a few hundred slots, the resort has expanded over the past quarter-century, incorporating various gaming, hospitality, recreational, and retail amenities throughout its campus close to Tuolumne City and Sonora.

Resort Expansion Highlights Over 25 Years

One of the initial significant expansions occurred in 2005, adding over 50,000 square feet to the gaming area. This enhancement included 1,100 slot machines, 22 table games, a high-limit gaming section, along with bars and eateries, as well as a designated non-smoking gaming space.

Additionally, the same development unveiled Seven Sisters, a dining spot located on the third floor that overlooks the resort. The addition of a 24-lane bowling alley, sports bar, and restaurant followed, with renovations to the bowling alley in ensuing years, an expanded arcade, and the establishment of a Kids Quest-operated supervised play area for children.

A six-story parking garage made its debut in 2009. In 2011, the Bear Creek convenience store and gas station opened, featuring a touchless car wash available 24/7, along with a selection of snacks, beverages, and made-to-order burritos and tacos.

The Bear Creek underwent a 1,600 square-foot renovation in 2025, incorporating groceries, meats, and fresh produce catering to travelers and locals alike.

“Our aim is to provide offerings for all age groups, and reflecting on what we have here, it’s clear we’ve achieved that goal,” noted Ty Day Jr., Chairman of the Tuolumne Economic Development Authority Board of Directors. “Our team’s combined efforts over the last 25 years have made Black Oak a premier destination for family enjoyment in Northern California.”

Hotel and Recreational Features

In 2013, the resort branched into the lodging sector with the launch of The Hotel, a six-story establishment housing 148 suites, a coffee shop, fitness center, heated swimming pool, and jacuzzi.

Further renovations and expansions in May 2025 introduced 48 additional suites directly connected to the gaming area. The original 148 suites were also redesigned during this update.

The pool area received upgrades, featuring an enlarged hot tub and an outdoor screen for sports viewings. A new splash zone with water slides, fountains, and a bucket drop for kids was also inaugurated.

For outdoor enthusiasts, an RV park was added in 2018, boasting close to 100 RV sites. Amenities include a clubhouse, heated pool, spa, basketball court, pickleball courts, and a catch-and-release fishing pond.

Golf and Sports Attractions

In 2019, the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians acquired Sonora’s only 18-hole golf course, Mountain Springs. After renovations, the course reopened under the name Teleli.

This golf facility comprises a pro shop, driving range, as well as a bar and restaurant. Stay-and-play packages are also available, linking hotel stays to golfing experiences.

In December 2023, another family-friendly venue, Elevate, opened, featuring an indoor sports facility with attractions such as trampolines, batting cages, sports simulators, dodgeball courts, and even a junior ninja warrior course.

Celebratory Activities Planned for May

“To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Black Oak Casino Resort, a diverse array of events and promotions will unfold throughout the month of May,” announced the resort.

The celebration will include a fireworks display, cash giveaways, live music, and special food offers spread out over the month.
