  • Hip-hop icon Flavor Flav made a memorable appearance at the Clark County Government Center to promote a parade in honor of the U.S. women’s hockey team’s Olympic gold medal achievement
  • The rapper chose a respectful and formal approach for his address, eschewing his usual flamboyant style
  • Local officials provided guidance on the intricacies of regional governance, explaining the differences between the City of Las Vegas and Clark County

It’s not often that a high-profile figure like Flavor Flav takes the stage at a Clark County Commission meeting to advocate for an initiative. However, that was the case on Tuesday when the hip-hop star expressed his support for the “She Got Game”/SHE weekend parade that celebrates the victorious U.S. women’s Olympic hockey team.

An awkward moment from the meeting, shared on X by Las Vegas Review-Journal journalist Mick Akers, featured Commission chair Mike Naft cutting off Flavor Flav’s enthusiastic speech for an important request.

“I apologize for the interruption,” Naft said with a smile. “My colleagues want to ensure we have your name on the record.”

This was Flav’s cue to perform as everyone anticipated, but instead of declaring “Flaaavor Flaaaaav!!!!!”— which could have gone down as the most unforgettable moment at the Clark County Government Center— he opted for a surprisingly subdued approach.

Flav expressed the significance of the parade to him personally, stating, “I’m a girl dad,” and likely wanted to avoid jeopardizing its approval with his signature exuberance.

“Oh, I’m sorry. My name is Flava Flav…William Drayton, also known as Flava Flav,” he said apologetically. “I’m sorry, everyone.”

“Thank you,” replied Naft. “We maintain decorum here.”

There was absolutely no chance that the Commission would decline the “She Got Game” parade. Enthusiasm for the celebration is booming across the region, including from MGM Resorts, which eagerly embraced Flav’s suggestion on X to create a “real celebration” with a parade and concert, offering over 100 complimentary hotel rooms for the team and their entourage.

The parade is scheduled to kick off on July 16 at 8 p.m., starting at the Bellagio and proceeding down the Las Vegas Strip to Toshiba Plaza outside T-Mobile Arena.

The Palms Casino Resort also committed to providing extravagant luxury suites and gourmet dining experiences alongside MGM’s offerings. Additionally, Alaska Airlines reported that they are organizing flights to bring the athletes to Las Vegas, and StubHub took to social media to affirm that they would gladly assist with tickets to events.

Moreover, an impressive $130,000 has already been raised via a GoFundMe created by Flav to ensure that the team receives some financial support.

Ice-Cold Hockey

This alternative celebration stemmed from a blend of historic success and political controversies. On February 19, the U.S. women’s hockey team triumphed over Canada with a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory in Milan. However, the accomplishment soon became overshadowed by an exchange involving President Donald Trump.

After the U.S. men’s team also captured gold, Trump jokingly told the men’s locker room that he would “likely be impeached” if he didn’t invite the women’s team to the White House.

This remark was quickly met with backlash from the athletes. Captain Hilary Knight appeared on SportsCenter to denounce the comment as “distasteful and unfortunate,” emphasizing that such remarks “overshadow the incredible achievements” of female athletes. (In a diplomatic response, USA Hockey officially stated that “academic and professional commitments” were the reasons for the team’s decision to forgo the State of the Union address.)

The players took the initiative to accept Flav’s parade offer.

Flav’s Second Blunder

During the meeting on Tuesday, Flavor Flav found himself corrected a second time while attempting to elevate the excitement around Las Vegas.

“I don’t care what anyone says, but I live in the best city!” he proclaimed to the commissioners.

Commissioner Tick Segerblom quickly interjected, “Just a reminder, Flav, while Las Vegas is fantastic, you’re in Clark County for this parade.”

It’s a subtle geographical distinction that tends to frustrate both governing bodies.
