John Alite, once a hitman for the Gambino family, became a Republican councilman for Englishtown, NJ, last year after proclaiming his departure from a life of crime. However, he was arrested on Friday for alleged loansharking and extortion, according to the New Jersey State Police.
At 63, Alite transformed himself into a public speaking advocate against crime following a year-long imprisonment for racketeering, which included two homicides, four murder conspiracies, and an array of violent crimes across several states.
His past is marked by involvement in illegal activities such as gambling, loansharking, drug trafficking, and other forms of extortion, highlighted in both court documents and his own admissions.
Released in 2012, Alite’s prison term was reduced due to his cooperation with authorities, aiding in the conviction of Gambino enforcer Charles Carneglia and, although unsuccessfully, testifying against former acting boss John “Junior” Gotti.
Discoveries from the Police Raid
During a SWAT raid conducted at his residence on Friday, officers uncovered an assortment of weapons, including six baseball bats, brass knuckles, numerous switchblade knives, and two slapjacks—weaponry often associated with close combat encounters.
Alite faces several charges, including theft by extortion, corporate misconduct, usury, and making terroristic threats, as reported by the New Jersey State Attorney General.
The prosecution alleges he demanded exorbitant interest rates for loans and resorted to threats of violence against borrowers, employing tactics reminiscent of the Mafia’s operations in New York.
More specifically, it is alleged that he threatened to “strike an individual with a baseball bat” and claimed to have previously “gut” individuals like “fish,” according to prosecutors.
In a revealing interview with NJ.com in May 2025, Alite confessed to committing six murders and being involved in 30 to 40 shootings tied to his engagements in gambling, extortion, and drug trafficking. He also expressed aspirations of eventually securing a seat in Congress.
Alongside Alite, another individual named Stephen Locrotondo, aged 67, who has a past conviction for check fraud in 2012, has also been charged with extortion.
Community Reaction
Members of the council expressed disbelief over Alite’s arrest. Councilwoman Janet Leonardis remarked to NJ.com that he had been “an exemplary citizen and council member.”
His attorney, Douglas Anton, told The New York Post that his client had “maintained a law-abiding lifestyle since distancing himself from his past nearly two decades ago.”
“John is politically vocal and advocates fervently for his beliefs. This can sometimes lead to polarizing attention, which in contemporary society may provoke reactions from those in power that are not entirely authentic,” Anton stated.
In contrast, John Gotti Jr. had less favorable opinions of Alite in a 2016 New York Post interview, branding him “one of the most shameless individuals God has created.”
