A former high-ranking Thai Buddhist monk has received a 12-year prison sentence for misappropriating approximately $92,000 in charitable contributions meant for advancing a religious college.

Phra Thepwatcharasitthimethi, now identified by his lay name Wirach, was found guilty by Thailand’s Central Criminal Court for misdirecting 3 million baht meant for Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University into his private account.
Previously, Wirach served as the chief monk of Phichit province and the abbot of Wat Tha Luang Temple. He was embroiled in a scandal involving sextortion that captured public attention last year, resulting in the defrocking of at least nine abbots.
$11.9 Million Blackmail Scheme
Wirach faces accusations of colluding with Wilawan Emsawat, aged 35, to embezzle donations for personal benefit. Wilawan allegedly seduced numerous monks and then extorted them, with a total of $11.9 million reportedly spent on online gambling activities.
Authorities assert that Wilawan specifically targeted senior Buddhist monks for profit, forming close relationships only to secretly record intimate encounters and later use the footage for financial blackmail.
Wirach departed the monkhood on July 15 of last year amidst intensifying scrutiny concerning his alleged involvement with Wilawan. As reported by The Bangkok Post, he became the ninth senior monk to resign as a result of this scandal.
Law enforcement initiated investigations into Wilawan following the sudden disappearance in June 2025 of Phra Thep Wachirapamok, the abbot of Wat Tri Thotsathep Worawihan in Bangkok, who fled to Laos.
Investigators discovered five mobile devices owned by Wilawan, containing various videos and images purportedly showcasing her engaged in sexual activities with several monks.
Enforcement of Celibacy Rules
The unfolding events have prompted a Thai Senate committee to propose new laws aimed at criminalizing sexual relationships between women and monks.
Theravāda Buddhism, the major branch observed in Thailand, mandates that monks practice strict celibacy and refrain from any thoughts or actions that could lead to sexual interactions.
This case has underscored the concerning lack of oversight and accountability regarding temple funds, which often receive millions in baht through merit-making ceremonies. These ceremonies involve worshippers giving donations, believing it brings good fortune or enhances their karma in future lives.
Wilawan is currently facing charges including blackmail, money laundering, and possession of stolen property as she awaits her trial.
