Stan Cho, the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Gaming in Ontario, has stepped down following backlash over his $16,000 claims for hotel accommodations in Toronto, despite being a resident of the city.

“In hindsight, I acknowledge my error,” Cho stated. “I accept full responsibility, as I wish to avoid becoming a distraction from our objectives to stimulate the economy, ensure safety for families, and enhance this province.”
Cho Quits Over Hotel Expenses
The iGaming market in Ontario, which was regulated and launched in April 2022, now boasts 47 licensed operators and 81 gaming websites, as reported by iGaming Ontario, cementing its status as one of North America’s largest iGaming sectors.
Cho took over the role in June 2024 after Ontario Premier Doug Ford executed a cabinet shuffle, succeeding Neil Lumsden, the former Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sport.
With this transition, gaming became part of Cho’s responsibilities, while sports were assigned to a dedicated ministry.
Controversy Surrounding Hotel Charges
Cho explained that he filed hotel claims for nights when the legislature sessions extended late. However, he has since reimbursed the full amount of his expenses, adding, “to the penny.”
He intends to remain a Member of Provincial Parliament for Willowdale, a district in north Toronto.
Minister Fully Reimburses Expenses
“I have a young family at home and often faced scheduling challenges that kept me away from them,” he mentioned in the statement. “During late nights, I opted for the more convenient choice without considering how it might appear to a constituent working a double shift.”
It was reported by Canadian Press that several of Premier Ford’s cabinet members had also been using a special circumstances clause for hotel expenses in Toronto since 2023.
“We must exercise prudent fiscal management,” remarked Ford. “Stan made the right decision by resigning from his cabinet position, and such behavior is unacceptable, so he is reimbursing every single penny.”
