This leading prediction market platform announced in a post on X earlier today that it would transition to a time-weighted average price (TWAP) model instead of relying on a single terminal price to resolve up/down event contracts related to seven different cryptocurrencies. The affected time frames are five and 15 minutes as well as one hour. Utilizing TWAP may yield a more accurate representation of a digital asset’s price behavior over these intervals rather than depending on a single price point. This TWAP method has been effectively used in various financial sectors, especially among institutional traders.

“Time-weighted Average Price (TWAP) is a widely recognized trading algorithm based on a weighted average price determined by time,” as stated by Interactive Brokers. “TWAP is utilized for executing substantial trade orders. With the TWAP value, traders can break down large orders into several smaller orders at the TWAP price, which is the most advantageous value.”

As one of the preeminent operators in the prediction market space, Polymarket is injecting $1 million in liquidity across the eight impacted cryptocurrencies to emphasize its shift towards TWAP.

The Significance of the TWAP Transition

Timed cryptocurrency markets on yes/no exchanges have faced criticism on various fronts, notably due to their vulnerability to manipulation, a concern underscored by a recent paper circulated by researchers from Stanford University and Singapore Management University.

In essence, the researchers revealed that timed cryptocurrency markets are vulnerable to manipulation by automated trading systems, indicating that $8.2 million in wealth was transferred from unaware retail traders to tech-savvy platforms. The academics examined approximately 16,000 five-minute Bitcoin trades on Polymarket over two months, identifying consistent instances of heightened buying or selling activity in Bitcoin on Binance, a major cryptocurrency exchange, just before the expiration of those contracts.

These trades had an adverse impact on Polymarket users, and shortly after the five-minute contracts concluded, evidence emerged on Binance that the “culprits” were exiting the market.

The researchers noted that manipulation appeared less severe with 15- and 60-minute timed crypto contracts, suggesting that the TWAP methodology could be a feasible means to curtail such activities.

A Strategic Move by Polymarket

As cryptocurrency continues to thrive as one of the most prominent non-sports segments in prediction markets, platforms like Polymarket are motivated to maintain market integrity and reassure traders that they are not easy targets for professional manipulators.

Data reinforces the rationale behind Polymarket’s TWAP transition. A report published last month revealed that, as of mid-July, digital currency volume on all-or-nothing exchanges surged by 44 times on a year-to-date basis.

The cryptocurrencies impacted by Polymarket’s new approach include Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, Hyperliquid, BNB, and Dogecoin.
