The California casino restaurant worker accused of stabbing five of his coworkers earlier this month has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and assault charges.

Joseph Benedict John Naugle, 22, pleaded not guilty on Wednesday in Placer County Superior Court for the August 16 attack at Dos Coyotes Border Café inside Thunder Valley Casino Resort in Lincoln, Calif.
Naugle is charged with attacking five coworkers with a knife before 2 p.m. Two victims sustained serious injuries leading to two counts of attempted murder, along with assault with a deadly weapon charges.
One victim was taken to a hospital, while the other four received on-site treatment, all non-life-threatening injuries.
Naugle was apprehended at the casino, still in his apron, post-attack, and is currently held without bail.
Psych Exam Requested
During the hearing, Naugle’s defense requested a psychiatric evaluation to assess his mental fitness for trial.
His family disclosed his ongoing health issues, stating, “Joseph has been battling severe physical and mental health problems for a long time.”
The family expressed sympathy for the victims and requested understanding of the complex medical issues involved in the case.
Naugle has a history of health concerns, as evident from a 2012 incident where he went missing during a swimming party due to undisclosed medical problems.
Motive Still Unclear
The motive behind the attack at Thunder Valley remains unknown, where Naugle and the victims were colleagues at Dos Coyotes.
Thunder Valley Casino Resort, owned by the United Auburn Indian Community, is situated roughly 30 miles from Sacramento.
Criminal protective orders are issued for the five alleged victims in the case.
Naugle’s next court appearance is scheduled for September 2.
