Mohegan Sun is investing $30 million to modernize the Mohegan Sun Arena.

Located inside the Mohegan Sun casino resort, the 10,000-seat multipurpose stadium is undergoing a renovation that will reimagine every aspect of the guest experience. The $30 million budget includes all-new seating, upgraded food and beverage outlets, a refreshed concourse, a new arrival experience, all-new premium hospitality amenities, and a VIP lounge.
Mohegan Sun Arena opened in 2001, about five years after Mohegan Sun welcomed its first guests in Uncasville, Conn.
For 25 years, Mohegan Sun Arena has set the standard for live entertainment in the Northeast,” said Joe Soper, vice president of sports and entertainment for Mohegan. “The goal is simple: to create a more immersive, comfortable, and thrilling venue for fans as well as our artists and promoters.”
The Mohegan Sun Arena has hosted more than 4,250 events and welcomed nearly 18 million guests since 2001.
Sun Sets on WNBA Team
The Mohegan Sun Arena was the home arena of the WNBA Connecticut Sun from 2003 through the 2026 season.
In 2001, the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut acquired the WNBA franchise for $10 million from the DeVos family, owners of Amway and the NBA’s Orlando Magic. After the DeVos family chose to stop operating the Orlando Miracle, the Mohegan Tribe relocated the team to Connecticut—just two years after opening the $40 million Mohegan Sun Arena.
The tribe’s bet on the WNBA was a winning one, as billionaire Tilman Fertitta bought the Sun for $300 million in March. Fertitta is moving the team to Houston, where he owns the NBA Houston Rockets.
The Connecticut Sun outgrew their market as the WNBA’s popularity surged in recent years, leaving Mohegan Sun unable to adequately accommodate the team. Players expressed frustration with sub-par facilities and frequent arena overbookings that disrupted practice schedules.
In 2024, reports surfaced that the Sun were forced to practice on only half of their court ahead of the WNBA Playoffs because the other half had been rented out for a two-year-old’s birthday party.
As the WNBA’s smallest media market, Connecticut struggled with gate figures, drawing fewer than 9,000 fans per game and ranking near the bottom of the league in attendance.
Construction Impact
Mohegan said the Mohegan Sun Arena renovation will largely be completed alongside the venue’s current event schedule. However, the facility will close temporarily from mid-December 2026 through mid-February 2027 to complete “significant elements” of the project.
The Mohegan Sun Arena is expected to reopen on Feb. 28, 2027, with a show from Breaking Benjamin, P.O.D., and Filter.
