A crash involving an autonomous Zoox robotaxi and a silver Nissan Murano sent one person to a Las Vegas hospital Friday morning (Sept. 25), as Nevada Highway Patrol investigated the collision on the Strip.
The driver of the Murano sustained injuries in the crash and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The incident took place on southbound Las Vegas Boulevard near Four Seasons Drive close to the south end of Mandalay Bay.
The cause of the collision and the party at fault were not immediately determined. Information about passengers in the Zoox at the time of the crash was also not provided.
Initial reports indicated the collision occurred around 8:19 a.m., but Nevada Highway Patrol took charge of the investigation at 9:01 a.m. after responding to the scene.
Four southbound lanes in the area of Four Seasons Drive were temporarily closed during the towing and investigation before reopening later.
The incident occurred as Zoox continues to expand its services in Las Vegas. After commencing public rides in the city on Sept. 10, 2025, Zoox began charging passengers on Aug. 10, 2026, following approval for commercial operations of its specialized vehicles. Paid services were also extended to Harry Reid International Airport in September.
Zoox’s robotaxis are distinct from traditional vehicles and other autonomous cars as they lack a steering wheel, accelerator, or brake pedals. These purpose-built vehicles are designed to operate bidirectionally and feature four passenger seats arranged to face each other.
Amazon acquired Zoox in 2020 and operates it as an independent subsidiary.
Zoox, I Did It Again
This incident is not the first involving a Zoox vehicle in Las Vegas this year. A minor crash in June on the Strip Boulevard at Harmon Avenue required towing of the Zoox vehicle, as reported by the Review-Journal. Another incident in early July involved a collision between a Zoox and a human-driven vehicle at the MGM Grand.
In a separate incident on Aug. 25 at Decatur Boulevard and Russell Road, an unoccupied Zoox was rear-ended by a Ford 4Runner after stopping for an emergency vehicle, according to Zoox and local reports.
Zoox has also dealt with safety concerns this year, including issuing a voluntary recall of 105 robotaxis in July after an incident where an unoccupied vehicle entered an active fire scene in the Arts District on June 20. Following this, the company implemented a software update to enhance smoke detection capabilities.
The cause of the collision on the Strip on Friday is still under investigation.
