The Atlanta Braves emerge as the leading contenders to win the 2023 World Series, currently sitting at +310 odds as the MLB playoffs begin today.
The Houston Astros, last year’s World Series champions, began this season as favorites to repeat with +650 odds. However, it’s been 23 years since the MLB has seen a repeat champion, with the New York Yankees being the last team to achieve the feat from 1998 to 2000.

During Spring Training, the Astros (+650), Braves (+750), Yankees (+750), Dodgers (+850), Mets (+950), and Padres (+950) were the frontrunners to take home the World Series title.
Surprisingly, three of these top favorites, the Yankees, Mets, and Padres, failed to qualify for the playoffs despite having high payrolls this season.
The Yankees experienced a stunning slump, enduring their worst losing streak in 28 years, while the Mets underwent significant changes, trading pitchers Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander before the trade deadline.
Braves Look to Avoid Early Playoff Exit
Under the leadership of manager Brian Snitker, the Atlanta Braves have reached the playoffs for six consecutive seasons but have only secured one World Series victory in 2021.
Last season, the Braves won 101 games but were eliminated by the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League Division Series (NLDS). This marked their third NLDS defeat since 2018. In the 2020 pandemic-shortened season, they were bested by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series (NLCS), denying them a World Series appearance.
However, in the 2021 playoffs, the Braves had a dominant run with an 11-5 record, ultimately defeating the Astros in the World Series to claim their first championship since 1995.
The Braves, aiming for their fifth championship, have been a popular choice to win the World Series for much of this season. Opening Spring Training with +750 odds, they were considered the second co-favorite alongside the Yankees on DraftKings’ futures board.
Notably, the Braves achieved back-to-back 100-win seasons for the first time in two decades. With 104 victories this year, they matched the franchise’s second-highest win total. In 1993, the Braves also won 104 games but were eliminated in the NLCS. Likewise, the 1998 Braves won 106 games but fell short in the NLCS.
This season, the Braves demonstrated impressive consistency, posting identical home and road records of 52-29. Additionally, they share the best away record with the Baltimore Orioles.
Securing the #1 seed in the National League, the Braves earned a bye and will face the winner of the NL Wild Card round between the #5 Miami Marlins and #4 Philadelphia Phillies.
Key Players for the Braves
Right fielder Ronald Acuña Jr. enjoyed an MVP-caliber season, tallying 41 home runs, 106 RBIs, and leading the majors with 73 stolen bases. Acuña boasted an impressive slash line of .337/.416/.596.
In addition, first baseman Matt Olson offered consistent performance by playing in every game this season. He led the league with 54 home runs and 139 RBIs, with a slash line of .283/.389/.604.
Designated hitter Marcell Ozuna contributed 40 home runs and 100 RBIs, while second baseman Ozzie Albies added 33 home runs and 109 RBIs to the Braves’ offensive firepower.
Three further hitters, Austin Riley, Max Scherzer, and Justin Verlander, all produced impressive numbers. Each player drove in over 100 runs this season, highlighting the Braves’ offensive prowess. Riley narrowly missed reaching the century mark with 97
