- Alberta to soon launch pre-registration for igaming market
- Expected 20% tax on GGR for Alberta’s igaming sector
- BetMGM comments on the launch of the Alberta market
BetMGM emerges as the inaugural operator to officially announce its participation, with reports indicating that Alberta has begun the licensing process for igaming and sports betting, along with a forthcoming pre-registration phase.

Gaming News Canada was swift to report on Alberta’s developments, highlighting a recent conference call that involved government officials and representatives from sports betting, online casino operators, industry suppliers, and various other stakeholders.
The proposed tax rate stands at 20% on 97% of gross gaming revenue, influenced by deductions for First Nations initiatives and social responsibility obligations prior to revenue allocation. Ontario similarly imposes a flat 20% tax on operator GGR.
20% Tax Structure
The Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis (AGLC) will oversee operator registrations. Subsequently, the newly established Alberta iGaming Corporation is tasked with finalizing agreements with licensed operators. The registration fee for obtaining an iGaming Operator license has been set at an annual fee of $150,000, along with a one-time application fee of $50,000.
Additionally, an igaming bulletin is now available on the AGLC website, advising potential applicants regarding the Standards and Requirements for Internet Gaming (SRIG).
Alberta Launch Anticipated in 2026
The SRIG documentation is organized into multiple sections, covering essential topics such as regulatory oversight, general standards, social responsibility measures, and technology and security requirements for registered igaming suppliers.
BetMGM, a prominent figure in the regulated Ontario igaming scene, which is approaching its fourth anniversary, contacted Casino.org today with the following message:
“BetMGM excels in fusing sports and casino experiences, and Alberta marks the first jurisdiction with a multi-product launch in over four years,” stated Matt Prevost, Chief Revenue Officer of BetMGM. “Based on our successful track record in Ontario, we are dedicated to providing safe, legal, and regulated sports betting and iGaming to Alberta in the near future.”
Leading industry players such as DraftKings, FanDuel, theScore Bet, PointsBet, and NorthStar are poised to enter the Alberta market once it officially launches.
