An investigation by UK news channel Sky News revealed the shutdown of three major “Robux casinos”, BloxFlip, Bloxmoon, and RBLXWild, following the expose on illegal online gambling within the Roblox gaming app.
The Sky News report highlighted the involvement of minors as young as 12 in gambling on these third-party sites using Robux currency for games like slots and blackjack.
Despite the age confirmation requirement, lack of proper age verification allowed children of any age to participate using their Roblox credentials.
164M Users
Roblox, with over 164 million active users as of August 2020, is a popular online platform and game creation system that attracts a significant number of underage players, as per SEC filings.
BloxFlip, Bloxmoon, and RBLXWild collectively drew around 2.8 million visitors monthly, handling substantial bets involving Robux. Although only cryptocurrency could be wagered, winnings were withdrawable as cash.
Following the Sky News coverage, BoxFlip announced its closure and initiation of user refunds, attributing the decision to legal pressure from Roblox Corporation.
Similar shutdowns were observed from Bloxmoon and RBLXWild shortly after.
Legal Action Against Roblox
Roblox disclaimed any association with these unauthorized sites, advocating for law enforcement action to shut them down and prevent exploitation of users.
However, a class-action lawsuit against Roblox Corporation in Northern California alleges the facilitation and profit-making from third-party gambling transactions using Robux, indicating a breach of duty towards user well-being.
