  • Blue Jays’ World Series odds surge to +1200 following weekend’s ALCS setbacks
  • Team aims to bounce back with Shane Bieber set to pitch Game 3 in Seattle
  • Do Canadian gamblers continue to bet emotionally as Mariners lead 2-0 in the series?

Recall the Blue Jays’ once-favorable World Series odds I mentioned on Saturday morning, positioned at +340 at DraftKings, just following the Dodgers in betting favorites? Forget that. In a matter of two days over the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend, the team’s pursuit of a championship derailed significantly, after suffering two significant defeats in the American League Championship Series (ALCS) against the Seattle Mariners.

Blue Jays’ Odds Take a Plunge

Canadian sports enthusiasts are eager for any triumph from the limited teams that represent our nation, especially in matchups against American rivals – any reason to wave our flag and sing our anthem in today’s politically charged atmosphere. We witnessed a significant surge in support during last winter’s hockey 4 Nations Face-Off, particularly noted during the tumultuous showdown in Montreal. Remember the skyrocketing betting volumes for that final game (a Team Canada victory) in Boston?

The Mariners boast a lineup packed with talent – MVP contender Cal Raleigh, Julio Rodriguez, Jorge Polanco, along with recent additions Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suarez at the trade deadline.

What surprised Blue Jays’ bettors was Bryce Miller’s outstanding performance in Game 1 on Sunday. After allowing a leadoff home run to George Springer on the very first pitch – a trend echoing the Jays’ home run dominance against the Yankees in the ALDS – Miller, positioned as the fifth starter for the Mariners (behind Logan Gilbert, Luis Castillo, Bryan Woo, and George Kirby), excelled through six innings while conceding just one additional hit. Seattle clinched Game 1 with a 3-1 victory.

Mariners Favored in Game 3 of ALCS

In Game 2, the Mariners started Gilbert, while the Jays countered with rookie Trey Yesavage, who had a standout performance in the Yankees series, with 5.1 innings and 11 strikeouts in Game 2. Rodriguez (with two), Polanco, and Naylor all smashed homers, leading the Mariners to a resounding 10-3 win. Yesavage initially struggled in his first inning yesterday, but settled down to finish with four innings, five runs, four hits, and four strikeouts.

What’s next? The Blue Jays acquired former Cy Young winner Shane Bieber (7 GP, 4-2, 3.57 ERA, 40.1 IP, 1.02 WHIP, 37 SOs) specifically for high-stakes games like this. He is slated to start Game 3 tomorrow at T-Mobile Park in Seattle at 8:08 PM EST, facing Kirby (23 GP, 10-8, 4.21 ERA, 126.0 IP, 1.19 WHIP, 137 SOs). The weather forecast for tomorrow predicts a 5% chance of rain, with temperatures around 16 degrees Celsius (61 degrees Fahrenheit).

Mariners Dominate with Four Home Runs in Game 2

All the excitement that illuminated Toronto and Canada after the Yankees series has vanished quicker than the weekend’s turkey leftovers.

And what about the current World Series odds? Quite disheartening. BetMGM indicates the Jays were at +325 prior to the ALCS, +550 after their Game 1 loss, and +1200 today after Game 2. ESPN BET placed the Blue Jays’ odds at +300 before Game 1, which escalated to +500 by late Sunday night and culminated at +1200 following Game 2, where they remain.

Canadian sportsbook operators are likely experiencing relief with these recent developments, having previously anticipated a significant liability from Jays’ bets, as Canadians passionately wager on the limited home teams available. The dedication to their professional sports franchises is unmatched.

Canadian Sportsbooks Experience a Boost

“Speaking with several colleagues, they’ve certainly profited from those two specific games,” noted Phill Gray, former head of trading at Sports Interaction. Now, the Jays stand at 5/1 for the ALCS and 14/1 for the World Series, while still attracting significant action.”

“In contrast, a large U.S. sportsbook reported substantial losses from the Dodgers’ Game 1 win [over the Brewers in the NLCS] and the Mariners winning the first two games. This starkly illustrates the contrast in betting behavior between a Canadian team’s games versus American matchups. It’s genuinely unique given the scarcity of our major sports teams.”

“When it comes to international competitions, the pattern shifts. For instance, the U.S. Men’s Team will likely be the biggest liability for U.S. sportsbooks in next year’s World Cup. U.S. betting also varies regionally, with different tendencies on West Coast teams compared to those in the East.”

Bieber vs. Kirby in Game 3

BetMGM lists the Moneyline for the Blue Jays at +115 and the Mariners at -135 for Game 3, with the Spread showing Jays +1.5 (-208), Mariners -1.5 (+170), and the Over at 7 (+100), -120 on the Under 7.

“The Blue Jays entered the ALCS positioned as the second-favorite to win the World Series at +325, trailing only the Dodgers. Following their Sunday loss, their odds adjusted to +550,” remarked Eric Biggio, Lead Baseball Oddsmaker at Caesars Sportsbook. “After yesterday’s defeat, they’ve drifted further to 14/1, a disappointing outcome for the sportsbook, as the Blue Jays winning would have been an ideal scenario for our World Series futures.”

Biggio referred to the overall liability – encompassing both American and Canadian bettors. Will Canadian bettors let their emotions guide them over their intellect for Game 3?
