Authorities in Cyprus have temporarily revoked the operating license of local bookmaker BookieCo after the arrest of its co-owner, Lazaros Philippou, during a probe into alleged organized crime activities, as reported by the national betting authority.
This suspension occurs amidst escalating violence attributed to organized criminal groups in Cyprus, including the release of disturbing videos showing torture occurring within a local casino.
The 47-year-old Philippou remains in custody as investigations continue. Although the regulatory body has not directly connected the decision to suspend BookieCo’s license with the ongoing probe, the timing aligns closely with his arrest, notes The Cyprus Mail.
Failed Assassination, Violent Confrontation
In July 2025, Philippou, a prominent figure in Cyprus’ business sector, survived an assassination attempt when a gunman shot at him while he was cycling.
On January 17, 2026, a violent clash erupted in downtown Larnaca, where footage showed two groups engaging in a brawl with weapons such as axes, sticks, and crowbars, alarmingly close to a police station.
Police reports mentioned hearing at least two gunshots during the incident, resulting in injuries to bystanders.
Among those arrested in connection with the brawl, police discovered graphic torture videos on one suspect’s mobile device.
The videos, recorded between 2023 and 2025, depicted individuals being held captive in what investigators termed “an office from hell” on the first floor of the casino. Victims were subjected to beatings, threats with firearms and knives, and coerced into handing over money or making forced confessions.
Chilling Torture Videos
In one disturbing clip, an individual with severe facial injuries is seen being assaulted, while another recording shows him being threatened with a knife to the head. Prosecutors note that the victim displays signs of severe trauma.
Further footage reveals a foreign individual desperately pleading for their safety as they are brutally beaten with a metal object, blood streaming from their face. In another scene, a gun is aimed at a victim’s mouth, while additional videos depict knives being sharpened, hands being slashed, and belts used as makeshift whips.
In late January, authorities arrested a “well-known businessman” from Larnaca, 47, believed to be the leader of a criminal syndicate that utilizes violence and intimidation to collect protection payments.
