Boyd Gaming and the Pamunkey Indian Tribe have begun construction on a $750 million casino resort in Norfolk, Virginia, representing a significant increase in investment compared to the original plan.

After facing delays, the Pamunkey Tribe has begun construction of the casino complex next to Harbor Park Minor League Baseball stadium on the Elizabeth River.

Boyd Gaming CEO Keith Smith expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its potential to become a regional attraction.

Pamunkey Chief Robert Gray emphasized the tribe’s deep historical connection to the Norfolk area.

To signify their dedication to the local community, Boyd and the Pamunkey Tribe made a charitable donation to Norfolk State University during the groundbreaking ceremony.

Tribal Backstory

The Pamunkey Tribe and its partners faced challenges in developing the casino project, including issues related to infrastructure funding and design revisions. Boyd Gaming’s involvement has accelerated the progress of the project.

The $750 million resort will feature a hotel, dining options, entertainment venues, and a variety of gaming offerings, including a casino floor and sportsbook.

The development is set to include a temporary gaming tent as per the 2020 casino legislation, with smoking permitted on-site in compliance with Virginia laws.

Local support for the project was evident as casino workers rallied to show their enthusiasm for the forthcoming casino.
