Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Bristol officially opened on November 14. Shortly after its grand opening, the ownership group is already considering future expansions for the $515 million integrated resort.
Situated in Southern Virginia near the Tennessee border, Hard Rock had a spectacular opening night featuring a concert by country music star Blake Shelton. The former Voice coach celebrated the start of the resort with officials from Hard Rock International, Par Ventures, and the United Company.
Key figures in the Bristol business community, Jim McGlothlin of United and Clyde Stacey of Par Ventures, played a significant role in convincing state legislators in Richmond to pass laws allowing for the establishment of casino resorts in economically disadvantaged cities. Before the recent opening of Hard Rock, United and Par Ventures acquired 13 acres of land next to the resort.
McGlothlin and Stacey informed Cardinal News, a local news outlet, that the property acquisition is in preparation for potential future expansions. Currently serving as parking spaces for employees, the businessmen believe the land will eventually be developed.
Future Plans for Hard Rock Bristol
The purchased property on the corner of Catherine Street and Gate City Highway (U.S. 421) cost McGlothlin and Stacey $7 million, with Nulife Glass VA Realty being the seller, according to property records.
Initially intended for a recycling plant, plans fell through, and the land, which used to house a dairy production facility, is now owned by Hard Rock. Andy Poach, a spokesperson for the resort, stated that the site across the highway could be ideal for future expansions.
The purchase was made to ensure readiness for future growth demands,” Poarch mentioned.
Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Bristol replaced the Bristol Mall that stood for almost 50 years before being demolished over the past two years. A temporary casino operated within the mall’s former Belk department store from July 2022 until November 2024 when the permanent facility was completed.
The new facility boasts a 45-foot-tall guitar at the entrance, 303 hotel rooms, various dining options, a casino with 1,500 slot machines, 50 live dealer tables, and a Hard Rock Bet Sportsbook.
Hard Rock Live, a multi-use venue spanning 23,000 square feet, will host major performances along with conventions, trade shows, and special events like weddings. Upcoming events include concerts by Bush, Air Supply, Boys II Men, and comedian Kevin James.
Future Possibilities
Hard Rock Bristol offers a small indoor/outdoor pool and fitness center, but currently lacks a spa.
To become a premier resort destination akin to its other properties in the U.S., Hard Rock Bristol might consider expanding its wellness amenities across the street. For example, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa features a Rock Spa & Salon offering a range of treatments and services for relaxation and pampering.
