The Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation (NSGC) is the current owner of the Halifax property, which Great Canadian Entertainment has been managing for the past 20 years. The company also operates Casino Nova Scotia in Sydney on behalf of NSGC.

The Halifax location, situated on Upper Water Street, features over 500 slot machines, live table games including blackjack and roulette, poker rooms, and dining options such as the 3Sixty buffet and lounge, alongside live entertainment at the Bruce Guthro Theatre. Meanwhile, the Sydney venue offers slots, electronic tables, and even a golf simulator. Dartmouth Crossing is a commercial real estate venture located in Dartmouth, within the Halifax Regional Municipality.

New Casino Nova Scotia Expected by 2029

According to recent announcements, NSGC plans to sell the Halifax casino property to a third party to achieve “the best possible value.” The new casino at Dartmouth Crossing will be specifically designed and constructed by Great Canadian Entertainment, following notice from NSGC regarding this intention.

As part of the proposal, the provincial government plans to lease the existing facility from any third-party buyer, allowing Great Canadian to operate the casino until the new Dartmouth Crossing facility is ready, which is projected for completion in 2029.

The goal, as envisioned by both the province and Great Canadian, is to ensure a smooth transition for patrons, minimizing disruptions during the relocation process.

Casino Updates: Focus on Smooth Transition

“We acknowledge the government’s strong wish to fully realize the potential of the property where our current Halifax operations are based, and we are excited to advance this vibrant new vision for gaming in the Nova Scotia market,” said Matthew Anfinson, CEO of Great Canadian Entertainment.

“There is significant work ahead to actualize this vision, so it remains ‘business as usual’ for our dedicated team members and guests at the Halifax Casino Nova Scotia. This announcement signifies a pivotal moment for Casino Nova Scotia and the province; we are enthusiastic about continuing our investment and operations within Nova Scotia.”

In addition, Great Canadian and NSGC have confirmed the extension of their operational agreement for an extra 25 years following the anticipated opening of the new casino in Dartmouth Crossing in 2029. Should the plan for the new casino not move forward for any reason, Casino Nova Scotia will maintain its operations under the existing agreement.
