- Chef Filippo “Gigi” Rovito faces scrutiny over $1 million bond claims in gambling case
- Church refutes Rovito’s statements regarding parish participation made in bond documentation
- Gambling probe linked to organized crime alleges threats, intimidation, and violent debt collection
A chef with ties to organized crime is under investigation for allegedly collecting debts for an illegal gambling ring operating in the Chicago suburbs, with suspicions growing after he reportedly misled a judge about his church attendance.

Filippo “Gigi” Rovito, proprietor of Capri Ristorante in Burr Ridge, Illinois, was among 22 defendants who declared not guilty on Thursday to charges of gambling and extortion associated with the operation, reportedly revolving around a network of restaurants in Chicagoland.
Rovito was recorded stating he would “knock [the victim’s] lights out and shove his head into a [gaming] machine” when tasked with collecting debts for the network. He was granted release on a $1 million secured bond on May 4 and is currently under home detention with electronic monitoring while awaiting trial.
Misleading Claims of ‘Man of the Year’ Status
In his bond motion, Rovito claimed to be an active member of Our Lady of Pompeii Church and stated he had been honored as “Man of the Year,” supporting his assertion with a photo alongside the parish priest.
Following his release, his attorneys submitted a new request for him to be permitted to attend mass for three hours every Sunday.
“Mr. Rovito is a practicing Catholic and a long-term member of his parish community,” the request indicated. “Regularly practicing his faith, including attending Sunday Mass, is vital to his life and spiritual comfort.”
However, representatives from Our Lady of Pompeii Church have claimed that Rovito’s attendance is minimal at best, stating to NBC: “He rarely comes to church. He is hardly seen in our congregation.”
Moreover, church officials disputed Rovito’s claim of having received “Man of the Year” recognition, arguing that no such title exists.
Providing false or misleading information to the court during pretrial release proceedings can result in severe repercussions, including potential bond revocation, more stringent release terms, and even additional criminal charges in serious instances.
Contrary to the statements from the church, Burr Ridge Mayor Gary Grasso has expressed support for the chef, describing him to NBC 5 Chicago as “a commendable corporate and community citizen.” This support may be bolstered by the fact that Rovito has created a dish named after him, “Linguini alla Mayor Grasso,” available on the menu at Capri Ristorante, alongside “Wise Guy meatballs.”
Details of ‘Porterhouse Parlay’ Operation
The group of 22 defendants was apprehended by federal agents on April 29, marking the conclusion of an extensive investigation dubbed “Operation Porterhouse Parlay.”
Federal prosecutors allege that the operation was orchestrated by James “Jimmy the Greek” Gerodemos and Dean “Gem” Gialamas, who purportedly used establishments such as Gino’s Steak House in Merrillville and Paragon Restaurant in Hobart for meetings and operations.
It is alleged that the enterprise generated millions through unlawful sports betting, video gaming, and loansharking. Prosecutors contend that members utilized intimidation, violence, and threats as means to enforce debt collection.
Rovito was previously mentioned in a separate Mob-related federal investigation over a decade ago concerning an alleged plan to assault a suburban car dealer over a $300,000 debt; however, prosecutors stated that the beating did not transpire, and Rovito was never charged.
Additionally, he has a prior conviction related to sexual assault that resulted in imprisonment during his teenage years.
