The 23-year-old All-Star shortstop stayed at the Illinois casino from Thursday night until 8 a.m. on Friday, as reported by USA Today.

This breach of team rules resulted in Abrams playing a game against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field at 1 p.m. on Friday.

Due to lack of sleep, Abrams went 0-for-3 in the game with a walk and a strikeout.

Initial news of the demotion came from CHGO’s Cody Delmendo.

On Saturday, he was sent to the Rochester Red Wings, the Triple-A affiliate of his MLB team, for the remainder of the season.

Losing Salary

This move also meant a loss of $30K from Abrams’ $752K salary, according to ESPN.

The Nationals have about a week left in the current season.

Since the Rochester season ends this weekend, Abrams will officially report to the Nationals’ minor league facility in West Palm Beach, Fla., per USA Today.

Internal Issue Identified

We are aware of the incident, but it remains an internal matter that will be handled internally,” stated Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo to The Athletic.

Nationals Manager Davey Martinez also commented, “I want to clarify that this was not based on performance.

“I will stand by CJ. He is a vital part of our Nats family, and will continue to be. However, without disclosing further details, this was the necessary action,” Martinez said.

In his last 49 games, Abrams was hitting .203, as per Yahoo Sports. He had 5 home runs and 17 RBIs. Since August, he committed 7 errors. He struck out 48 times and walked 10 times.

It is uncertain if Abrams will contest the demotion, reported by MSN.

In 2022, the Nationals acquired Abrams from the Padres as part of a trade involving Juan Soto, NBC reported.

“Previously regarded as one of baseball’s top prospects, Abrams earned his first All-Star selection in 2024 after batting .268/.343/.489 with 15 home runs and 48 RBIs in his initial 89 games,” according to Sports Illustrated.
