Clairvest Rumored to be Interested in Purchasing MGM Springfield

Clairvest Group, a Canadian private equity company, is reportedly interested in acquiring the operating rights of MGM Springfield from MGM Resorts International (NYSE: MGM) contingent on approval from the city of Massachusetts.

Reports from The Republican and MassLive suggest Clairvest’s involvement in a potential divestment of the Springfield casino by MGM amidst disagreements over promises made in the casino host agreement.

The Massachusetts gaming venue, which cost $960 million and opened in August 2018, has failed to meet expectations, with the city accusing MGM of not maintaining promised staff levels and gaming offerings.

Current discussions indicate Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno delaying a possible sale of the casino, despite potential agreement with a rumored buyer like Clairvest to convert an adjacent property into a hotel.

Reasons for Clairvest as MGM Springfield Buyer

Clairvest’s history with MGM makes them a logical contender for purchasing MGM Springfield.

In a recent transaction, Clairvest acquired operating rights to MGM Northfield Park from MGM, implying a close relationship with VICI Properties, the landlord of MGM Springfield. This familiarity suggests possible support for Clairvest in acquiring the Massachusetts operations.

Additionally, Clairvest’s extensive experience in gaming assets, including ownership interests in various casino properties, positions them as a suitable buyer for MGM Springfield.

MGM has expressed a desire to divest from Springfield, with potential costs of $500 million from delays in the transaction. Should the sale proceed, MGM may face minor losses compared to the initial investment in developing the casino.

Rumors of MGM’s intention to divest MGM Springfield surfaced in March 2024 and continue to circulate within the industry.
