- A former treasurer of a Little League chapter in Connecticut is accused of embezzlement.
- The individual passed away unexpectedly after allegedly misappropriating over $165,000 from the Little League.
Authorities in Connecticut suspect that a previous treasurer of a Little League Baseball chapter misappropriated $115,000 intended for the organization to fund online gambling via his FanDuel account.

Kenneth E. Grohs Jr., a lifelong resident of Naugatuck, CT, dedicated nearly 20 years to the Union City Little League as both treasurer and coach. However, law enforcement alleges that before his unexpected passing in May 2025, Grohs embezzled at least $165,000 from the organization.
The Little League and Grohs’ obituary reflected fond memories and tributes to him.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Kenneth Grohs Jr. to the Union City Little League community. Kenny was not merely a board member; he was a vital part of our league. For over 20 years, he devoted his time and spirit to Union City Little League, primarily serving as treasurer. His dedication played a crucial role in shaping the league,” stated the organization in a Facebook post from May 5.
“He will be remembered not only for his unwavering service but also for his ability to bring laughter to our meetings and gatherings. His witty humor and lighthearted remarks fostered an uplifting atmosphere that we will profoundly miss,” the Little League concluded.
However, less than two weeks later, the organization revealed that they had encountered “challenging news.” Authorities have now confirmed that Grohs was allegedly responsible for a significant theft before his demise.
Discovery of the Embezzlement by Successor
Following Grohs’ death, the new treasurer promptly observed that a large sum of money from Union City Little League was missing. Reports from CT Insider indicate that law enforcement received a complaint on May 12.
Investigations revealed that Grohs had transferred $115,000 from the Little League’s financial account to his FanDuel gaming and sports betting account. Additionally, he withdrew another $50,000 in cash from the Little League account via ATMs, as confirmed through surveillance footage.
In October 2024, the Little League received a $200,000 grant from the state, allocated through the federal government’s COVID-19 American Rescue Recovery Funds program. This funding was intended to help the Union City Little League maintain its instructional leagues catering to young girls and boys, progressing from T-ball to the major divisions.
Local prosecutors declared that no charges would be brought against Grohs since he passed away prior to the discovery of his alleged theft. Moreover, authorities have found no evidence implicating any accomplices in the supposed crime.
The cause of Grohs’ death at age 57 has not been disclosed.
A Tragic Conclusion to a Respected Community Member
It remains uncertain whether Grohs struggled with a gambling addiction or if another health incident prompted his unusual actions. He was highly regarded in his community before his untimely demise.
Messages of sympathy for his bereaved wife and children have filled his online obituary.
“Kenny was an exceptional man who had an impact on so many lives,” one tribute stated.
“He was a true character, extremely funny, and an all-around nice person,” another comment noted.
“There are not many like Ken. I will treasure every conversation and embrace I shared with him,” said yet another message.
Grohs dedicated 37 years of his career to Eversource in a managerial role.
