Possibly the most intriguing storyline among numerous NFL coaching stories recently was the possibility of a reunion between Tom Brady and Bill Belichick with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Reports indicated that Brady had contacted his former coach from the New England Patriots to consider taking on the head coaching position with the Raiders.
Belichick Begins North Carolina Position
Brady is now a minority owner with the Raiders. Together, Brady and Belichick achieved six Super Bowl victories with the Patriots. Following the dismissal of head coach Antonio Pierce by the Raiders, Belichick accepted a coaching position at the University of North Carolina. He signed a five-year contract and is currently assembling his coaching staff.
According to reports on NFL.com: “Sources suggest that Brady believes the circumstance in Las Vegas necessitates a coach of Belichick’s caliber and experience to establish a consistent winning program.”
Pierce Dismissed on Tuesday
Brady spent 20 seasons playing for the Patriots under Belichick’s guidance.
As per the NFL.com report, Belichick’s contract with North Carolina includes a $10 million buyout if he departs before June 1, 2025, which either Belichick or the Raiders would need to pay.
The New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bears, Patriots, and Raiders currently have vacancies for head coaching positions.
Raiders Planning to Rebuild
However, according to the Athletic, Belichick has stated that he has no intentions of leaving UNC and is solely focused on coaching and recruiting for the Tar Heels.
“I did not come here to depart,” he told reporters on December 12, the day after accepting the position with Carolina.
The Raiders are in need of assistance, having finished the season at the bottom of the AFC West with a 4-13 record.
