An Alabama state judge has sided with prosecutors regarding the case of the husband of a former Saraland Police officer, who was severely injured in the line of duty. They asserted that he wasted a significant portion of the financial aid intended for her care on gambling.

As per state court documents initially highlighted by NBC 15 News, Prichard Police Sgt. Aaron Tucker was appointed as the conservator of his wife Jackie Tucker’s financial affairs in 2016. Jackie was left with life-altering injuries after being shot in the head during a domestic violence incident in December 2016.
Following her incapacitation, Jackie’s estate received substantial financial support from charitable events and a $343,000 benefit allocation from the Department of Justice. State prosecutors indicated that an independent audit revealed Jackie’s estate amassed $554,305 between 2017 and 2021, yet by June 2022, nearly all of those funds had been depleted.
Police Sergeant Accused of Misusing Wife’s Care Funds
Mobile County Probate Judge Mark Erwin concluded that Mr. Tucker failed to fulfill his responsibilities as conservator for his incapacitated wife. Instead, Judge Erwin noted that Tucker expended most of the funds on personal indulgences, including frequent visits to casinos in Mississippi.
The ruling stated that only a minimal fraction of the spent funds had genuinely benefited Jackie. This investigation led to Aaron’s removal as conservator, with attorney Scott McNally being appointed as “Guardian ad Litem” (GAL).
“The GAL uncovered that Tucker had used a considerable amount of the funds at Mississippi casinos. The GAL observed that the $97,000 Mercedes Sprinter van bought by Tucker, supposedly for ‘transportation needs related to her injury,’ lacked any type of handicap lift or assistance,” Erwin elucidated in his ruling.
During the slightly over four-year span, Tucker utilized $553,957.09 from his wife’s estate.
Hartford Insurance Company, which provided the fiduciary bond Tucker was mandated to acquire upon being designated as Jackie’s conservator in 2017, is presently seeking access to his ongoing earnings to recoup its bond.
As the bond’s underwriter, Hartford was instructed by the court to compensate Jackie’s estate $300,000 due to Aaron’s financial mismanagement. The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office continues to oversee the operations of the Prichard Police Department while an ongoing public corruption investigation unfolds.
Incident of 2016 Shooting
On December 21, 2016, Jackie, an experienced officer with the Saraland Police Department, along with her partner, Ron Hannah, responded to a domestic violence call in Saraland, a modest suburb of Mobile. Upon their arrival, 27-year-old Matthew Blake Richardson opened fire, striking Tucker in the head.
In retaliation, Hannah returned fire, prompting Richardson to flee. A short foot pursuit ensued, leading to Richardson being shot and ultimately succumbing to his injuries. According to Richardson’s grandfather, the young man had been struggling with severe mental health challenges and had been acting erratically that day.
Though Tucker was in critical condition, she managed to survive a complex surgery. She spent over a year in the hospital followed by years in rehabilitation facilities to recover her motor skills and speech.
