The three commercial casinos in Detroit—MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown—achieved a collective revenue of $114 million from slot machines, table games, and retail sports betting in May 2025, as per the Michigan Gaming Control Board data.
This figure marks the highest revenue reported for the month of May since 2019, when the establishments recorded $125.8 million in revenue from slots and table games.
From the overall revenue in May 2025, $112.7 million originated from slots and table games, which indicates a 1.2% rise compared to the same month in 2024. The trio of casinos contributed $9.1 million in gaming taxes to the state and paid $13.4 million in wagering tax and development agreement contributions to the City of Detroit.
Increase in Retail Sports Betting Revenue Amid Declining Handle
Retail sports betting accounted for $1.3 million in revenue for the month, based on a total handle of $9.2 million. Even though the handle saw a 2.2% drop from April, sportsbook revenue surged from $336,000 to $1.3 million, buoyed by a 14% hold rate. The casinos remitted $48,431 in state gaming taxes and $59,193 to the city from their sports betting activities.
Hollywood Casino at Greektown led all properties with a sports betting handle of $3.6 million. MotorCity Casino closely followed with $3 million, while MGM Grand Detroit reported a handle of $2.6 million.
MGM Dominates Market Share and Growth
MGM Grand Detroit reported the highest property-level revenue in May, generating $53.1 million, reflecting a 3.9% increase from the previous month and representing 47% of Detroit’s market. MotorCity Casino reported $33.9 million, which is a 2.4% increase from April, while Hollywood Casino at Greektown saw a slight decline to $25.7 million, down from $27.1 million in the previous month.
The casino sector in Detroit registered a 1.3% growth compared to May 2024, when total revenue was $111.3 million. In comparison to May 2023, revenue grew by 7.6%. As of May 2025, it is the second-best performing month of the year, standing just behind March.
